Velasco finished in second, knowing that a victory in the second moto would give him the overall. At intermission, McDonough was two for two, but Karmann was done for the day after a crash on his yz450F in another race. Nicholas Baker rose to the challenge in the second 250cc Novice moto, battling with McDonough on the first lap until both riders collided in a corner, moving McDonough back to sixth and putting Baker out of contention. "I was in sixth or something, and I got up to third, and I just fell over in a little turn and went back a couple of places and caught back up and ended up in third in that moto," McDonough said. "But I rode good." Betancourt finished first in moto two and earned the overall victory. McDonough ended up second overall, with Velasco third. Retaining his composure, McDonough didn't miss a beat in his last moto, leading the 125cc Novices from start to finish for the overall victory. Dustin Wilder finished second in the moto, followed by Velasco, who received second overall with his 2-3 performance. "I felt like I rode good," McDonough said of his performance. "My bike was running really good, and the track was awesome. I felt like I could just go fast... I never really got tired." Track conditions were perfect, thanks to overcast skies and cooler temperatures. "The track was so good, it was the closest it has ever been to an Amateur National at a local race - I could go fast everywhere," said I-Moto/MX Tech/Shift/Posey Racing/Spybacked KTM mini rider Zach Andrade, who won the 80cc Intermediate and 80cc Supermini classes easily. A member of the inaugural series in 2004, Meldrum's previous bests were two second places; however, "XXX" made the jump to victory with an inspiring unbeaten performance at The Mark in Moline, Illinois. Sweden's Kenny "Starfighter" Olsson clinched second place, with series leader Anthony Barlow taking third at round six of the 2005 X-treme International Ice Racing Series. The evening's action began with Olsson taking a flyer off gate three to take the lead over Scotsman Kevin Little and Barlow. On lap two, Barlow capitalized on a mistake by Little, but there was no catching Olsson out front. Meldrum's route to victory began in heat two with an explosive start off the challenging gate four, cutting across the pack and leading into the first corner, followed by England's Scott Courtney and Alan Ferrow. Surprisingly, Frenchman Nick Fafard was left at the back. In heat three, American Greg Starcevich made a mistake in the first bend, sending Dave S two. Despite the pressure from Olsson and Barlow, Meldrum remained cool and took a popular win. "I changed my setup before the race, and it paid off," a grinning "XXX" said afterward. "I've been close to winning twice before, and I was determined not to slip up tonight on my return to Moline." "I had a puncture in my last race," runner-up Olsson said, "so I borrowed a rear wheel for the final, and it just drove me all the time. I kept running into Meldrum every lap instead of being able to make a move! Second is good; it closes the gap on Barlow." Barlow, with 49 points, retains a lead of four points over the Swede, while Meldrum leaped into third, ahead of his countryman Little. Round five moves to the sunshine of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
