By DAN SCHMIn LAKE KOSHKONONG, WI, JAN. 23 S eventy teams from 14 states came to Lake Koshkonong, Wisconsin, to meet the challenge 01 the Steel Shoe Fund Three-Hour Ice Race. Some of the top racers in the country made the trek to Fort Atkinson: AMA National dirt-track winner j,R. Schnabel, faClory KTM Supermoto winner Benny Carlson, Supercross and Supermoto winner Doug Henry, Formula USA National Champions jeff Wood and Scott Greenwood, and the world leader in ISDE medals, jeff Fredette, It was a beautiful day; the sun was shining, and it was predicted that temperatures would skyrocket to a "scorching" 18 degrees! When Gordon Lunde threw the green flag, 32 heavyweight teams (in the first wave), 29 middleweight and nine lightweight teams (in the second wave) charged into the first of 55 turns on this 2.2-mile ice track. Schnabel, on the Bob's HarleyDaVidson/Memphis Shades Yamaha 450, took the early lead, but just three turns before completing the first lap he went wide and slid out in the loose fluff, handing the lead to Benny Carlson, on the Corse Superbikes/HMC KTM, jesse janisch, on the Team Suzuki/4&6 Racing Suzuki, ballied for third with Henry, on the Bettencourt's Honda, and Erick Bostrom, on the MilkManfTrackcontrol Honda. It took six laps for jeremy DeRuyter, on the West Bend Harley-Davidson Honda 250, and Tim Farrell, (!
