PHOTO BY GREG ROBERTSON GFI Racing Winter SEries South Round 2: Glen Helen Raceway Park Go Go Villopoto! By GREG ROBERTSON SAN 8ERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 16 W ashington State's 16-year-old future motocross superstar Ryan Villopoto continued to dominate the competition dUring his latest visit to the Southern California region. Those on hand at Glen Helen Raceway Park for round two of the GFI Racing/AMP Racing/MX ToysIFMF/Pro Action-sponsored Winter Series South saw Villopoto make short work of the I25cc Intermediate, 2SOcc Intermediate and Four-Stroke Open classes. In 250cc Intermediate action, Villopoto turned a couple of blistering starts into convincing wins. Derreck Murphy was runner-up in moto one, but he failed to make the gate in moto two, handing second overall to Honda-mounted Andy D'Arrigo on consistent 3-3 rides. Tyler Keefe finished second in moto two, going 5-2 for third overall, ahead of Andrew Jackson (4-1). From the second gate, behind the 12Scc Pros, Villopoto tore up the Perris Raceway track aboard his KX2S0F, catching and passing two-thirds of the Pros en route to the 125cc Intermediate first-moto win. Keefe turned a great start into a solid second-place finish, ahead of Ben Lamay and Mark Brewer. The 125cc Intermediates had the track to themselves for moto two, but the results were the same: Villopoto got to the checkers first, followed by Keefe. Travis Freistat worked on B.J. Bohrer for much of the mOlO, and his persistence paid off: He made a pass with time running out to score third in the final standings with a 5-3 day. Four-Stroke Open racing was more of the same, as the Thousand Oaks/Kawasaki Team Green-backed Villopoto ran away and hid in both motos. Hunter Hewitt (2-2) and Brian Bebeck (3-1) made it a Kawasaki sweep of the top three poSitions. Trent Pugmire was shredding the track aboard his Honda of Houston/FMF/Shift-sponsored Hondas as he went three for four to walk away with victories in the aocc Open and behind me. I pitted on the fourth lap, with Leivan right on me. He has a quick-pour and was going to gas a lot faster than me. Leaving gas, I only had a few seconds on him at that point, and Hoenshell, having not pitted. was pulling away from us both. My friend Brian Storrie, following me on the track. kept telling me, '20 seconds. 10 seconds. 20 seconds, 10 seconds,' so I just decided to keep pUShing forward and not concern myself with what Leivan was doing right behind me. Then I saw Hoenshell out of gas along the side of the track. 1 held on to win! This is the first money I've made in off road!" SCR YamahalAnswer/Dunlop-backed Leivan went on to finish second, with Hoenshell taking a splash of gas and coming in third. "Perhaps Hoenshell was the fastest." Leivan said, "but the checkered flag was at mile 52 rather than mile 50. We SlOpped. He didn't. We made it. He didn't." The win puts Carter in third (or the season. Matt Crouch is in second, behind Leivan, who has a commanding 22.point lead on the field with two rounds to go. RESULTS AA: I. Dwain Caner: 2. Steve Leivan (Yam): 3. Clay Hoenshell (Kaw); 4. Team Green's Kyle Cunningham came from out of the pack for a second-place finish in moto one of Openclass racing and then led Pugmire for the first half of moto two en route to his 1-2 score. Bryce Stewart carded a pair of thirds. Cunningham held off Pugmire (or the first Supermini moto win, with Pugmire getting a better jump out of the gate in moto two to keep Cunningham at bay to go 2-1. Blake Baggett (4-3) bagged the third-place trophy, over Tyler Villopoto (3-7) and Steven Tokarski (6-5). Bohrer's lead of the first Schoolboy moto lasted slightly over a lap before Hewitt took over at the controls and continued on for the win. Lamay was next to cross the line, followed by Caesar Popinhak and Blake Harber. Lamay checked out with the second·moto win on his Suzuki and took the overall honors. FreiSlat put a last-lap pass on Hewitt for second, but Hewitt still went home with second overall on a 1-3 showing. ITS Winter Series Round 5: Trials Land Oldar No Fair-Weather Competitor By PERRIS HILlTON PERRIS, CA, JAN. 8 Tori Carrillo gingerly guides her Gas Gas 280 though the deep waters of section one en route to the Novice-class win at the fifth round of the ITS Summer Series at Trials Land. A trial in the rain is a rare occurrence in ./"'\southern California, though only the diehards appear to appreciate the speCial condilions. Despite a turnout only 50 percent of normal, the ITS went ahead with the fifth round of its Winter Series. The sections were challenging. as they had been designed with fair weather in mind. Competitors had to deal with initialty wet rocks that became more treacherous as the mud from tubeless radial tires was deposited on the best lines. A water section le(t over from a previous event was noticeably deeper and threatened to swallow up errant riders and their unlucky bikes. With these conditions as a backdrop, the steeliest of competitors had the advantage. They could be aggressive on the intimidatingly slick granite boulders or could hold the brakes where other riders might coast out of bounds. There was a pitched battle in the Advanced class. Taking advantage of scoring the only
