District 37 Desert Championship SEries Round I: Jackrabbits MC Hare & Hound PHOTO BY GRUMPY Muddy Jackrabbits Fun for Bridwell! By KANDY THORNTON RED MOUNTAIN, CA, JAN. 9 other Nature threw the 330 entrants at the opening round of the AMA District 37 Desert Championship Series a curve when the Pineapple Express hit the Mojave Desert. Offroad racers in Southern California rarely deal with mud and water crossings. but this weekend's event was full of both. The Jackrabbits found themselves dealing with an entirely different course than the one they had laid out in dry conditions. Course markings blew away, sand washes became creeks, and then there was the weird substance that swallowed front tires whole; it quickly became known as "quick-mud." The extreme conditions did not phase Jesse Bridwell, who found himself running 15th overall on the Novice-line bomb start. Bridwell got a "decent start" on his Lipert Racing/Familybacked Kawasaki, and he quickly went to work reeling in the other muddy racers. "The mud didn't give me too much trouble - you just couldn't go as fast as you wanted," stated Bridwell, who was running third overall for the Novices when he came into the pits. Bridwell made a pass and was running second overall when the riders headed into a tight canyon. "I saw the lead Novice rider Deff Bunting] on a KTM 200 take the alternate, and I was able to take the lead at this point," Bridwell recounted. "The Jackrabbits did a great job on this course; they gave us everything: lots of single-track, hills, valleys, and even a river crossing that was about two feet deep!" Bridwell kept the rubber upright to the finish and claimed the top overall Novice laurels, as well as first 250cc Novice. Justin Anderson finished second in the 250cc Novice class. Bunting was able to hold on for the 0-200cc Novice win, followed by Nick Abele. Paul Krause proved that turning 40 only made him faster, as he was the top overall finisher. Krause had a few of the top young guns buzzing his rear fender, but patience and experience won out over youth, and he held on to the top position, ahead of Nick Burson, Chad Martin and Bryan Norman. Krause also took top honors In the Vet Open Expert division. Burson and Martin took first and second, respectively, in the 250cc Expert class, while Norman finished first in the Open Expert division. M Thirteen-year-old Jacob Argubright started the season off right: He was the first overall finisher for all one-loop riders and was also the top Mini Expert finisher aboard his KSVbacked Kawasaki. "Man, I was so wet and cold dUring this race, but I loved it!" exclaimed Argubright. "I kept gelling stuck in the mud, but I was able to keep the bike up and just kept going." Argubright was hounded for a bit by the second-place Mini Expert finisher, Chris Bell, on his O'Neal/Race Tech/FMF/Smithsponsored Yamaha. "Jacob and I were dicing pretty good, but I went down and he really pulled away," said Bell, "Only one Super Senior [Don eN Voyer] got by me. It was a fun race!" Doug Tom Anderson's Hangover Day Marathon Sand Hill Ranch The Last Hangover By RENEE ROBERGE-ANDERSON BRENTWOOD, CA, JAN, 1 or 32 years, Tom Anderson has invited motorcycle racers, amateur and pro alike, to the track at Sand Hill Ranch in Brentwood, California, to race his annual Hangover Day Marathon. From an all-time high of 600 riders to being completely rained out, this yearly tradition has always offered a challenging course, designed and built by Anderson and his son Phil. Run in a marathon format (usually one hour plus one lap). the course is apprOXimately 2 1/2 miles long and includes the infamous uphill fondly named "Godzilla." There are classes for quads, Vets, Old-Timers, two·stroke minis, four-stroke minis, 125s and 250s, and there is also an Open class (for any bikes) at the end of the day. This year's event was billed as Tom Anderson's nnd and final Hangover Day Marathon. "I want to spend more time on my boat and relaxing;' Anderson said with a smile. The day dawned bright and clear, but an F 34 overnight downpour gave the first few classes the extra challenge of negotiating the slippery mud. The 250cc class (for two- and four-strokes) promised to be an exciting race, with local luminaries GNCC number-one rider Rodney Smith, on a Suzuki RM250, and Yamaha YZ250Fmounted Nick Davis and Yamaha YZ250 rider Cameron Ewing pushing their bikes to the line. By this time, the sun had been shining for five hours. and track conditions were epic. From the dead-engine start, Smith got the holes hot, with Davis in hot pursuit. They both managed a screamin' 14 laps during the 45· minute time period, clocking low 3:305 on each lap. The battle for third was between 20-yearold YZ250 jockey Jeremy Johnson of Tracy, California, and the 15·year-old Ewing. At the end of lap one, Johnson held a solid third, behind Davis and Smith, while Ewing was at least six places back. However, by lap four, the two were close, and they passed each other numerous times throughout the rest of the FEBRUARY 16, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS 1) O/A: I. Paw Krause (KTM); 2. Nicholas Burson (Kaw); 3.
