District 36 Moose Weste.n Regionol Cross Country Chompionship Series Motul Western Regional BIC Cross Country Series Rounds '2/' 2: Pony Soldier Hare Scrambles Jordan Wraps It Up: 'Tis the Season! LISA K. GRAGG NIXON, NV, DEC. S P oints leader Jordan Brandt wrapped up the last race for the District 36 series, and with his second overall win of the year he earned the number-one plate for 2005. The race-day high was 21 degrees. after temperatures dropped to single digits overnight. and the terrain was covered in eight to 12 inches of ice and snow. (The typical average for this time of year here is 53 degrees.) The crowd was having a hard time adjusting, but soon enough they were making wind guards from milk cartons, pizza boxes or Moose tube boxes. and duct-taping up the mouth pieces on their helmets, putting on every pair of socks they owned, etc. Camel~ Baks? Forget it: With the wind-chill factor, it took about 15 minutes for ice to form a dam in the tube. Very few had come prepared for these conditions. After a slow start (some using engine power, some using leg power), the riders were off. At the first remote checkpoint, it was KTM privateer Bryce Olson and Brandt in front. Team Green rider Damian Galford held third the whole race, but the race for first was up in the air. The two times the front-runners came through the pits, they were less than 10 feet apart. Pitting after lap two, Olson went down on the icy pit row, but Brandt had his own problems: His quick-fill had frozen shut. The third and last 21-mile lap put Brandt a couple of minutes ahead. Olson had spent time off his bike: all three number plates were missing. "I got a decent Start - fourth or fifth off the line - and Brandt was ahead of me," Olson said. "I caught him in the tight stuff, but my 2S0 was no match for the 520 on the icy roads. There was a lot more of the roads. A rock flew and hit my front number plate; it was so frozen, it shattered into a million pieces [and] I crashed and slid. The ice was pretty unforgiving. It was a tough race." The rest of the riders rolled in with mustaches looking like glaciers, noses dripping with icicles. and eyelashes caked with ice clumps. These were survivors! The B class was overalled by Randy Mill, and the top C rider of the day was Aaron Vole. Anne Creson took her first win of the year, finishing with a smile. "It was scary," Creson reported, "but my husband and family are so supportive. Just getting to the start was a challenge: You had to ride through pit row, which was ice: people who were walking were falling, as well as those on bikes. But the hardest part was the huge downhill. It was icier on the second lap. There were bikes and bodies all the way down. The sweeper suggested the best way to get down was to walk it. I actually thought about laying the bike down and getting on top and riding it down like a sled: then I thought better and walked it down." RESULTS O/A: I. Jordan Brandt (KTM); 2. RESULTS Mutant Motorsports Final Five Showdown Round 3: Club Moto Bv KRIS HAUEE for being slippery (and messy) when wet, spirits were not high in the pits after Saturday's practice. Motocross racers just want to ride, though, so most planned to race the next day. Their faith in the Northern California motocross gods was rewarded with a dear sky and dry ground on Sunday morning; not a drop had fallen! The forecast: a perfect day for motocross. Track workers scrambled to finish track prep as the line grew at the front gate. Cory Kraut fired the first shot in the 2S0cc Beginner class with a strong start and the lead after the first lap. Aboard his Tracy Chevrolet/Extreme Motorsports CRF2S0, Kraut held the lead for another lap until hard charger Adam Fink worked his way past Richard Marcotte and Kraut and then pulled away for the win. Kraut commented that he was happy with his finish and he was feeling good. Kraut would line up with Fink again, as well an aggressive Thomas Camara, just a few motos later in the 12Scc Beginner class: Marcotte would start in the other division. Marcotte took the win convincingly in the first division of the 12Scc Beginner class, leading every lap. Kraut followed leader Camara for all four laps in Division Two. Fink was not a threat, working his way up to fourth after being close to last at the end of the first lap. The top finishers from both divisions would face off in the second moto. The second 2SOcc Beginner moto played out exactly the same as the first: Fink, Kraut and Marcotte finishing in that order, with the overall being the same. Mix it up a little and you have the results of the second 125cc Beginner Division One moto: Marcotte, fiink and Kraut, with Marcotte slowty working his way past Kraut and then Fink to take the win and the overall. Camara finished fourth, taking fourth overall also. Marcotte and Kraut's consistency earned them first and second overall, respectively. sports Final Five Showdown at Club Moto, the outlook was grim. With a briskly run program, only the final Preteen heat was caught out in the rain. Biane put his CR4S0 on the gate with the Money riders in the combined I25cc Pro/2S0cc Pro/2S0cc B contest. Kentuckian Adam Robinson topped both motos aboard his CR. In heat one, Blane started fourth and moved to second on lap two, and he stayed within two seconds of Robinson for the duration of the race. Robinson led moto two the entire distance, with Blane following him home for his class win. Blane grabbed the start in both Unlimited Amateur motos and was never challenged. Cole Reese (3-2) swapped finishes with Kyle Roark (2-3) and claimed second overall. Hoover, CYCLE NEWS • FEBRUARY 2, 2005 31
