Don Canet's STTARS/Three Brothers Racing Winter Series Round I: Grange Motor Circuit Trachy - Gone Without a Trace! By JAMEY BLUNT APPU VAlLEY, CA, JAN. 9 he supennoto gods always seem to smile on Don Canet perhaps because in the world of supermoto, he is the man. With a lot of Southern California under water from two weeks of rain, one had to wonder what type of turnout there would be; how many would come through the front gate for round one of the winter series? Well, with Three Brothers Racing, joker Machine and Wheel Wright all stepping up to the plate, this opening round had 102 entries. As for the rain, well, it was there, but not as hard as had been expected; in fact, several riders commented on how much fun it was to race in the rain. This is, after all, supermoto; they race in the rain! Nineteen riders thundered into tum one in the Novice main event. It was cold and slightly windy, and the track had wet and dry spots. None of this seemed to bother AK Composite's jason McCombie, as he led the field. Ohlins/Dunlop's Kenny Hunter ran second, with KTM's Andy Shellcross in third. On the first trip through the wet dirt section, Shellcross took second away from Hunter. McCombie checked out on the field and went on to victory, while Shelkross and Hunter stayed In second and third, but fought over it. Andre Barbosa, Casey Currie, Kell Coder and john Sterling all succumbed to the track conditions but rejoined the race with smiles on their faces. Hahm Motorsports' Gary Trachy was on hand for a warmup for his upcoming trip to Paris, France. However, it was Cameron Welsh who nailed the start and led into turn one. Down the back T straight, Trachy went from fourth to second, passing Shift's CD. Howell (who was riding a 2S0 in the 4S0cc class). Howell, getting pushed wide, quiclcly went backward to sixth. Manocchi's Curtis Cooksey ran third, and joker Machine's justin Ross was charging hard. Exiting the dirt on lap two, Trachy took the lead away from Welsh, and three turns later Ross was in fourth. Three and a half laps in, Cooksey went down, moving both Ross and Howell up a position. By lap six, Ross was showing Welsh a wheel at every turn; then, with two laps remaining. Welsh and Ross tangled just before the dirt section, and Welsh went down. This left the finishing order a long-gone Trachy, followed by Ross and Howell. It began to drizzle before the Open Expert main. Welsh once again nailed the start, only to have TLD's Trachy and KTM/A11 Access's Micky Dymond make short work of him to take first and then second away. Oxtar Boots' Justin Ross. having trouble with his KTM, dropped out on lap one. Two laps in, Trachy and Dymond had a five-second lead. On lap four, exiting the dirt, Welsh went down. Dymond hounded Trachy all the way home, with Acceleration Supermoto's Curtis Cooksey finding his way to third, over Adam Waheed, who rode hard to finish fourth. eN GRANGE MOTOR CIRCUIT APPLE VAllEY, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: JANUARY 9, 2005 11 OPEN: I. Despite this day's outcome, Ducut held on to the Beginner Modified championship, but with the momentum of these two critical wins, Kornbau nailed down the Beginner Stock and Overall Beginner championships. Brandon Warren's last ride with the CMRRA may not have been as spectacular as he may have wished. but the strength of an outstanding season carried him to an Amateur 80cc GP championship and the Overall Amateur championship. Amateur Stock and Veteran Stock Division Two honors went to Yasuyo Nakamura, while Dave Oventhal barely edged out Jim Spicher to take the Amateur Formula SO title. Alex Anastas took the Amateur Formula GP championship, rounding out the Amateur class. In the Expert ranks, two riders - Leonard Mellgren and Scott Garner - were so dominant as to overshadow some other excellent class wins. In the Expert 80cc GP class, student and teacher tested one another for most of the season. Skye Girard, the student. was head of the class in most events, but in the end Rich Johnson, the maestro, would not be denied his first-year Expert BOcc Championship. In Expert Formula SO. Brian Jackson was able to best both Garner and Mellgren to earn his first championship. Garner and Mellgren are longtime friends on and off the track, but that didn't lessen their competitive spirits: Garner edged out Mellgren to win the Expert Stock title, while Mellgren returned the favor to take the Expert Formula GP title, and in the final talty, Mellgren proved victorious for the Overall Expert championship by a mere three points over Garner. The Crawford family filled the podium in Formula Thunder Division One, with Leigh Crawford on top, his father, Tommy Crawford, coming in second, and Leigh's twin brother Craig Crawford taking third. The top three contenders for the Overall Club title were close, with most putting their money on Mellgren, the perennial favorite. With so many classes to consider, the numbers were hard to track. but with a strong 84 point lead over Mellgren, Garner received the laurels as the 2004 CMRRA Overall Champion. Also of note was Jim Spicher, who made the podium with a season of consistent podium finishes. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Warren and Alan Mortenson. The efforts of AI and Sherry Lyons, who provided another great season of racing, are much appreciated. RESULTS BEG STK: I. Bryce Kombau: 2. Jaime Rivas; 3. Justin Ducut; 4. Richard Gotdieb: 5.
