The opening round was devoted to Grand Prix racing, and topping the bill was the Alessi brothers' first Southland appearance on their new KTMs. They rolled to a pair of one-two punches in both the 12Scc and 2SOcc Expert races, mounted on two-strokes. "They're lighter and easier to throw around in the longer races," said their father, Tony, while Mike scored easy wins in both races, with younger brother jeff riding shotgun. jeff's appearance on the Austrian brand was a surprise, since he still had a year's contract with Honda. "Honda stepped back and looked at it, and said it wouldn't took right if Mike was on a KTM and I was riding Honda," explained Jeff, who was released from his contract. "KTM gave me a good ride." Like hi5 brother, jeff will be contesting the 12Scc outdoor Nationals in 2OOS. "But the AMA put in a new rule that forces me to ride the Four-Stroke Nationals to earn enough points for my Pro license." Jeff noted. Two steady but recently injured frontrunners showed they haven't lost their touch. Trent Pugmire and Jeff Loop each announced they have completely mended broken feet, and they rebounded with Victories. Loop, who had already broken his foot twice before, wound up breaking it a third time Lynn's. On paper, it looks easy... BY DAV AND HAL SANGUINEni SURPRISE, AI, NOV. 27·28 he Arizona State Championship and the AMX Grand Canyon Series came to an end on November 28 and 29 at Speedworld MX Park, near Phoenix. Those who didn't make it T 36 out to see the races definitely missed an outstanding weekend of racing. The competition was intense, and in numerous classes several racers were tied (or within points of one another) for winning their respective series' championships. The weather was outstanding on Sat· urday, but Sunday was cold and breezy, making track conditions challenging. Considering those difficult conditions, new track manager Vince Lantz did a great job. Track conditions were outstanding for Saturday's race, though, for the more than 300 riders contesting the day's 16 races.
