Arkansas State Championship MX Series Round 6: Bowie Bottoms Motocross Diaz Motorsports Winter Barn Burner Series Round I I: Chowchilla Fairgrounds Norton Nullifies the Nastiness in Enolal Make Room for Chambersl By CHUCK BAll ENOLA, AR, NOV. 27 other Nature once again dealt a hand that M had riders and families (olding theirs. With rain and cold moving through the state for the bener part of the Thanksgiving weekend, there was a definite need for rain jackets and rain boots at this. the sixth and final round of the Arkansas State Series. At the riders' meeting, a vote decided that the day's racing would be limited to one moto per class. ~ the classes began shooting out of the gate, it was easy to see that this final round of the series was in no way going to be an easy one. When the Four-Stroke class took off, it was a drag race through the mud to the first corner, where Brian Mitchell, Rob Baxley, Fate Tanner and Trae Norton battled for the lead. As riders sloshed their way through the mucky first turn, it looked as if Norton had it, followed by Mitchell. With laps being cut from matos, the racing was going to be as hectic as it was muddy. Once they got going, though, it was Beginner rider Fate Tanner, on his Kawasaki, who started putting down the fast laps to get by Mitchell, though he was still well behind Norton. The mota ended with Norton winning, followed by Tanner, Mitchell and Baxley. In the hotly contested 6Scc (9-1 I) class, Garrett Comer absconded with the holeshot, ahead of friendly rival Ashton Fitzgibbon. The duo began battling immediately until Comer made a mistake and "Fitz" slipped by for the lead. Between the shortened races and the sloppy conditions, it just wasn't Comer's day, as Fitz sped away for the win. As for the 85cc riders, it was Briar Sample who got out front early in the BScc (7-1 I) class and put on a clinic. As most riders "duckpaddled" with their feet as they attempted to stay upright, Sample was riding quite Dowd-like out front. making it look easy. Sample went on to win the mota. The Senior division got a little bit more competitive, as Todd Bloxham jumped out front early and began putting his Varnerpowered Suzuki in the point pOSition, ahead of Clay Morgan and Aaron Harrell. However, in keeping with the type of luck Todd has had most of this year, he went down - handing the win to Morgan. Harrell crossed in front of the checkers in second, just ahead of Bloxham. The efforts and contributions of all the racers and families who made this first year of the Arkansas State Series a great one are much appreciated. Ashton FItzgibbon (KTM). 85 BEG: I. T hree races remain in the first half of the Diaz Motorsports Winter Barn Burner Series. High points are being calculated and racing remains very competitive as this series nears its end. This weekend, 88 riders showed up to enjoy 21 main events. After the series end, black plates will be awarded in District 35 for the first time in more than 20 years. The end of the series will also conclude this promoter's relationship with the AMA. When racing resumes in January, this series will return as an outlaw series. The 2005 series opener is scheduled for January 8. At the I I th round of the series, Clay Chambers had a day to remember. Cushion tracks are his favorites, and his skill and talent reflect that. Riding in the Vet A event, Chambers got the holeshot and just kept going for the victory. Behind him, Mark Biscardi and Anthony Giammanco worked each other and the track hard for the second position. Switching pOSitions several times, these two put on quite a show. The final order was Chambers, Biscardi and Giammanco. Chambers has earned the number-one Vet plate in District 35. Fred Bennett took home the win in the OldTimers A event again this week, with Biscardi a close second. Bennett was back on the track in the Senior Vimage A event, but it was Giammanco who took this win, followed by Bennett and Bryan Bergen. Rick Diaz, John Dean, Barry Bauman and Dustin Hayes lined up at the start for the Adult IDOcc event. Diaz cook the early lead and just finished in the fourth spot. This week, the Bauman family raced together in the Open Four-Stroke class. Dad and two sons lined up, but it wasn't long before Briar went by his dad coming out of turn one and took the lead. Riding to win, Briar lost a wheel coming out of turn three. Behind him, younger brother Bronson got by Dad, which allowed him to finish the race in the second spot, behind Brandon Bernardeau, who was first off the line and first to the checkers. When the first 6Scc (7-9) moto left the line, Hale led the pack into the tight first turn before dropping into the long whoop section. Hale was followed by Nolan McPhillips, Scottie Siauterbeck, Tyler Fernengel and Alexis Green as the pack finished the first lap in a bunch. Hale was the quickest rider in the 65cc gang and was soon putting some distance on the field, turning in several flawless laps. Fernengel was also on the move, displacing Siauterbeck and McPhillips before the halfway point, but by then a race for the lead was not going to happen unless Hale faltered. When the white flag came out, Hale took it first with a 14-second lead, and Fernengel was second and had a little breathing room on Siauterbeck, who was running a good race in third. Rounding out the top five were McPhillips and Green, who were battling each other all over the indoor track. That order held CYCLE NEWS • JANUARY 19, 2005 45
