AMA District 12 Matocross Beans Bike Park Gallo Gobbles Up Beans Wins By JOHN KREPS DENNISON, OH, NOV. 7 T he AMA District 12 season is winding down qUickly. Beans Bike Park in Denni- son, Ohio, hosted the second-to-Iast event, which also featured double points. This, along with a nice fall day, coaxed riders out to get in some late-season racing. With the help of good weather, the natural-terrain motocross course was in beautiful shape for its last run until 2005. Beans Bike Park contains some of Stephen Gretchen from McMechen. West Virginia. Gretchen ripped around the long course on his KTM 50 for both moto wins of the 50cc (4-6) division. Coming home second was Robert Reicher, followed by Austin Hyndman in third. Tanner Nemeti used consistency to top the 7- to a-year-old division, winning the overall with 2-2 moto scores. First-moto winner Drew Lowery had secondmoto troubles but still managed second overall. Austin Western broke up the KTM sweep by taking third on his Polini. the best elevation changes in Ohio. but one section required a small amount of trimming RESULTS after rains earlier in the week washed oU[ a 50 BEG: I. It didn't matter, though; a very diffi- cult off-camber turn replaced one of the many downhills. Tony Gallo from Valley City, Ohio, wasn't looking for double points. but the young speedster WQS looking for some great racing action on a fun and challenging track. He found all of that at Beans. and he also managed to find four mota victories before the day was done. Splitting time between minis and big bikes, the longtime Suzuki speedster reeled off class wins in both the Supermini and Schoolboy divisions. Going back and forth from a mini to a full-sized bike is tough enough, but Gallo also manages to switch between two- and four-stroke engines as well. Chasing Gallo all day long was Uhrichsville, Ohio, resident Kyle Ditcher, on his KTM Supermini. Ditcher raced three classes, including the 8scc (12-15) class, which he won. It is worth noting that Ditcher competes in the Schoolboy class on the same bike, meaning he competes valiantly against much larger 250F motorcycles on his KTM mini. Taking second to Diteher in the 8scc (12-15) class was Suzuki jockey Jared Launenheiser. At Beans Bike Park, the Pee Wee classes race on the full-length track. This gives the little guys and gals a firsthand look at what lies ahead for them in future years. Taking the point in the youngest Pee Wee class was 84 JANUARY 12,2005 • CYCLE NEWS BY FRANK LEIVAN SMITHVIUE, MO, NOV. 7 SCRlYamaha's Steve Leivan finished the 2004 Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship campaign in the same fashion he started it: on top. The WR4s0 pilot spent the majority of the race alone out front, putting in fast and consistent laps on the way to his 93rd career victory and his eighth of the season. The Platte County Trailriders event at Smithville Lake (round 14) was a great way to end the series, with perfect trail conditions. beautiful weather, and a crowd of just under 300 riders. The large turnout meant the SA-mile course would be crowded at times. but the front-runners still managed to put in five laps. with Leivan averaging 20 mph. Kawasaki-mounted Aaron Shaw led the 14rider AA class through the opening minutes of the two-hour race, but he gave way to John Struckhoff, who was making his debut on the front row. Just before the end of lap one, Caleb Wohletz moved around Shaw as well, while eivan had made his way into fourth after starting in I I tho Wohletz, on his Team Green/Moose/Red Bull/No Toil KX2s0F, took the lead in the grasstrack section near the pits. and Leivan aggreSSively worked his way around Shaw and struckhoff for second. Leivan was content to follow for half of the second lap, until Wohlen chose a slower line around a downed tree, allowing the 12·time champion to ease his way into the front. Not long after. the leaders came upon what seemed to be a massive bottleneck. "It seemed like there were 40 bikes just sitting at the bottom of this hill, but there was a clean line right through the middle, and that's where I went," explained the Answer/Dunlop/ Race Tech/scottiClarke-backed Leivan. "When I got to the top, I looked back and didn't see anyone, and I figured even though it was early, I would try to open a gap." In fact, Wohlen stumbled while negotiating the climb, which allowed Leivan to get away and Yamaha rider Mark Gay to take over second. After two circuits, Leivan was nearly 20 seconds clear of the battle among Gay, Wohlen and Shaw, and he nearly doubled his lead on lap three, while Wohletz found his way into second, Shaw took control of third, and Gay slipped to fourth. Leivan continued to build his lead. Shaw was able to get around Wohlen for second after the two riders alternated gas stops. With a lap to go. Gay was a solid but lonely fourth, with Monster Energy/Jones Powersports/FMF rider Tracy Bauman, another minute back. The final lap saw no changes among the top four. Leivan recorded another convincing victory. Shaw finished the day in second and clinched runner-up honors in the series. Third on the day - and the season - went to Wohletz, after a bout with a broken wrist. Gay completed a great ride for fourth. and Bud light'S David Taylor took advantage of Bauman's late-race clutch problems to round out the top fIVe. RESULTS O/A: I. Steve Leivan (Yam); 2.
