CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series
Round 2: Exposition Arena
Sannan Supreme in Salem!
By CLAY LIGHT
SALEM, OR, NOV. 13
P
ete San nan's Pro-class debut was a successful one at round two of the CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series, held at the
Oregon State Fairgrounds' Exposition Arena.
On a pair of KTMs, the Oregon rider topped
the 12scc, 2sOcc and Open Pro classes.
Sannan's debut started off slowly, as he was
involved in a tum-one pileup, and by the time he
remounted, the rest of the pack had sped away.
Sannan forged through traffic and late in the race
settled into second in class, but by then catching
leader Matt Wilson and Washington's Kenny
Webster was out of the question, as the Honda
riders' lead was too great to overcome. Wilson,
one of the Northwest's top Intermediate riders,
held off the challenges from Pro rider Webster
to win. However, both riders won their
respective classes.
Webster took the lead at the start of moto
two but qUickly found out that sannan, long
regarded as one of Oregon's top Amateur
riders, was on a mission. On lap two, San nan
got around the Honda rider to take command
of the race. The KTM/Gran Prix CycielTroy
LeelTorco/No-Toil-backed 17-year-old didn't
make any mistakes in this mota and, at the
completion, used a 2-1 tally to win overall,
besting Webster (1-2). Wilson couldn't beat the
Pro riders in this mota; regardless, Wilson (I -I)
won the Intermediate portion, followed by
Kevin Petrushkin (2-2) and Justin Kivett (4-3).
San nan fared much better in the 2S0cc Pro
class. Riding a KTM 4S0cc four-stroke. Sannan
jumped out front of the combined 2S0cc
Pro/Intermediate field and was at the helm in
both motos. Even third-year Pro Webster
couldn't put a stop to San nan's fine rides in the
class. and San nan's second overall win came
much easier than his first one did. Webster
placed second in both matos, while Casey
Daugherty finished third both times out. Justin
Jensen won both Intermediate-class motos and
ran within striking distance of Daugherty in
mota two.
Kawasaki-mounted Robby McCabe and
Honda jockey Shane Skiles went head to head
in the 12scc and Before The Hill Junior classes.
Both riders scored first- and fifth-place finishes,
but McCabe's moto-two win was the clincher
for the overall Before The Hill win. Skiles was
the dominant performer in the I25cc class and
won both motos to lead McCabe (2-2), Tyler
schwentker (4-3), Allen Yother (6-5) and class
newcomer Chris McDaniel, whose 10-4
placings netted the KTM rider fifth overall.
Charlie McCarthy and Glenn Prestholt also
had clashes in two classes; the Kawasakimounted McCarthy had things going his way in
the Supermini class until a fall in
mota one resulted in Prestholt's
Victory. McCarthy could only
muster a fourth-place finish in
moto one, although he did come
back to win mota two. Prestholt
trailed McCarthy in moto two but
won overall with a 1-2 punch.
McCarthy won both Sscc (12-13)
motos, leading Prestholt and
Kaleb Basney.

Night I: Griulies Stadium
Goose on the Loose
By EDDIE GRAVEUNE
FRESNO, CA, NOV. 5
otocross fans in the Golden State couldn't
have asked for a better preseason tuneup than the third annual California Supercross
at Grizzlies Stadium in downtown Fresno. The
venue itself is the country's newest AAA baseball faCility and is very reminiscent of San Francisco's SBC Park. The field of riders expected
to attend was led by seven-time Supercross
champion Jeremy McGrath. "Showtime" had
won in 2003 and was considered a favorite to
repeat. Of course, there were several well·
established challengers looking to knock the
king off his throne.
Two of those would-be challengers started
to battle before the races even got under way.
Tyler Evans and Ryan Hughes scuffled in
practice and had words after the session.
Beyond those two, things stayed relatively calm
until the evening's program got going.
After looking very fast in his qualifying
heats, MotoworidRacing.com/Suzuki rider
Chris Gosselaar dominated the 125cc main
event. The Victorville native had limited
experience with his new machine, but it
was hard to tell. He attacked the long and
treacherous whoop section with a speed
unmatched in the tiddler class; that, more
than anything. set him apart from the rest

of the pack. Turbo Reif was second.
followed by Michael Young, Tiger Lacey and
Richie Owens.
By most people's standards, the 250cc main
went according to plan. Rusty Holland got the
holeshot, which was no surprise, but McGrath
qUickly reeled him in. Holland later fell,
surrendering several positions. McGrath rode
on to Victory, while Gosselaar continued to turn
heads, finishing second aboard his 250F. Moto
XXX's newest recruit, Justin Buckelew, was
third, followed by Evans and Hughes. (More on
those twO in a bit...)
The final race of the night was the Bounty
Hunter main event. which started riders in
single file and an inverted order. based on
their 125cc and/or 250cc main-event
finishes. McGrath was at the very back, just
behind Buckelew and Gosselaar. Northern
California privateer Eric Nye took the early
lead and gapped the rest of the field in the
early laps. Evans was coming through the
pack qUickly, followed by McGrath and
Hughes. A few laps in, Evans went high in the
berm after the whoop section, and Hughes
went up and got him.
Unfortunately, the incident claimed
several other riders, including McGrath. By
the time MC got going again, he was in last
place. Rather than give up, he put on a
