AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals Ind oo r Dirt Track Series Round 3: Paul Battles Arena Pair By DAN 0' Kings Tops in Tunica MAHONY TUNICA, MS, NOV 6 . A MA National Championship contender Rich t-'\t< ing showed them the way aro und at round three of th e AMP Indoor Sho rt Track Series, held at the Paul Battles Arena co mp lex in the rivers ide gam bling Mecca of Tunica, Mississippi , d irectly adjacent to the host hotel, the lovely and hospitable Delta Plantation Inn, King ma de the long tow down from Dysart , Iowa , payoff with a win in the O pe n Pro short-track final, wh ile his Pro-Am son Aaron tried, in vain, t o get around t he veteran . King the elder appeared to jump the starter once, and the event was red -flagged, but , even to Rich's ow n su rp rise , th e re sta rt was staged accordi ng to t he orig inal lineup o rde r. If t he re 's one thing yo u learn on the tough GN C circuit, it 's to never turn down a gift. On the restart, Rich was go ne in a flash of KT M orange . C lam ped to his re ar fe nde r, ho w eve r, wa s King t he you nge r, making th at o ra nge streak a bikel e ngth lo nger. H on da mo unte d Marc Williams, who was having an upand- down night, fou ght his w ay th ro ugh to third, but there was no catc hing the "King Express." just befo re the final, Rich had put Aaron to work changing Aaron's rear tire from a Goodyear to a Maxxis, while Rich put a new cut on his own Go o dye ar. When asked later a bout the t ire switch , Kingreplied: "The kid's hungry to beat his dad - [but) we galla make him work for it!" Jeremy Hinkle brought his lawton Brace & Lim b Ho nda home fo urt h , just ahead of Rob McUndon, who had earl ier engaged in a rubbing duel w ith Aaron to beat him in their heat race. The winner of that heat , Clay Hull, had to drive back to Texas in a bad mood after his Ro tax took a poop and he finished last in the final. The younger (and taller!) Kinggot his revenge in the O pe n Pro TT final, handing defeat to Florida's McUndon , Poppa King, and Hull. Forme r ca r-jum pe r-with-a n-X R7S0 Bubba Blackw ell came up from Lou isiana to take the victory in the hotly con te sted O pe n Amateur d ivision . The antsy riders made for several restarts before mak ing o ne lap. but at the en d of t hat round , Blackw e ll and his be a ut ifu lly turned-out Rotax were in fron t , and that 's where they stayed. Ho nda rider Travis Hull and Van Rayborn pushed and shoved each other fo r most of the distance , with runner-up going to Travis. Veteran Frank Bartram finished fo urth , followed by Anthony Verano and C hris England . Roy Hinkle w on a tough Vintage 600cc main. over Engla nd , series class le a d e r Kevin Ellingswo rt h , Jo hn Richards and Frank Spang ler, McLindan finished last after thr ow ing a chain on his BSA single whi le challenging for the lea d . Heat races were won by Hinkle and MeLindan. In Open A ma te u r TT act io n , Pepp e r Melin do n too k t he win over David Klimls, Verano and England . Walter Bart ram scored the victory in t he 125 - 250 cc combined ma in e ve nt. The crew at Pro moto Pro mo tio ns moved their base from the Clark County Fairgrounds' Woodland Arena for the winter months. Until their new facility is up and runn ing. they will be hold ing all events here. For the ir fir s t event of the year, they dec ided to onty run 50s, so as not to affect the National Arenacross event over the w eekend. The largest r a c e of the d a y, t h e SOc c Beginner class. saw Torsenn Brow n put his KTM in the winners' circle , leading the IS-lap main event from wire to wire. Top quali fiers Kyle Joh nso n and Corbin Kes le r strugg le d in the main eve nt. le aving Tyr u s Anc he t a , w ho I struggled in his qualifier, to finish second. Kesler too k thir d, Matthew Baher finished fourth, and Jordan Halverson took fifth . Another full class. the SOcc Open Beg inners , saw another w in by Brown, w ho dom inated both his qual ifier and the main event. Kesler fared slightly better in the O pen Beginne r class. taking second place . Ancheta took third . Halverson took fourth. and despite many falls. Joshua Ramberg managed a fifth. Te am Gold fish(Tro y Lee D e s ign s-b acke d Craig Cheever has been turning in a bunch of strong pe rform ances late fy in the 250c c Junior ranks , and this week he put up the impos sibleto -beat 2- 1 sco res to earn the overall class win fo r th e da y, In moto o ne , Yam aha YZ4S0 Fmou nted Broc Armbruster scored the win . with Cheever a close second. Ben Baines , Justin Falk and Tyle r Ruiz filled out the top five slo ts. In the seco nd mo ta, Ar mb ruster jumped o ut fro nt with the ho leshot and loo ked stro ng as he held the lead to just past the halfway po int ; then disaster str uck, as he cras hed at the botto m of the huge downhill. C heever was right there to take advantage of the situation, and he rode off for the easy moto win and, with it, the overall . Baine s took second , with Ruiz right behi nd him in third . Armbruster recovered for fo urt h, while Falk ro lled in fifth. O n the day, the overall win went to C he eve r wi th his 2-1 efforts, while Baine s (3-2 ) was t he ru nn er-u p.
