Best in t he Desert Silver State Se r ies
THE
DY AMIC
f you were looking for a bar-to -bar, fight-to -the -finish sort of race, you
weren't going to find it courtesy of Team Honda's Johnny Campbell and
Steve Hengeveld. No, the two partners did their best to put as much distance between their Pro Honda Oils/Precision Concepts/Dunlop-sponsored
XR6S0R and the rest of the field at the inaugural Henderson's Terrible
300. And in do ing so, they stamped the ir seal of do minance on Best in the
Desert's Silver State Series, easily taking the Open Pro-class champ ionship to
earn the number-one plate for the year.
Motorcycle and ATV racers would first do a lap of the 62-mile-Iong truck and
buggy course, laid out primarily to the southwest of the main pit; the fourwheeled vehicles would start a couple hours after. After completing that very
fast loop, however. the bikes and quads would then spend the rest of the ir day
negotiatinga separate 32-mile loop that was far more technical and. thus. more
physically dema nding than the first. Teams were slated for six laps of the short
.
loop while the lronman Experts
and Amateurs needed to do four.
Actua lly, He ngeveld did a little
d icing in the ea rly stages of the
race south of town , in the
Eldo rado Valley off the west side
of U.S. Highway 95, as he too k
t he fi rst leg of the race for his
team and started behind Clint
Braun, with David Pears on third
off the line . Braun and teammate
Matt Gosnell were unde rdogs .
Since they'd alread y clinched the
250cc Pro championship at the
