The event opened with a de mo nstration of true nat-tracking by local Taft res ident and ret ired pro Randy Griffith, wh o came o ut on his original flat-track racing bike , a 1968 Yamaha 650 cc tw in . Wear ing a ne w je r se y presented to h im by his grandch ildren with "Papa Randy" prin ted on the back, Gr iffith showed the spectat ors tha t he st ill has what it takes to get sideways at speed around those slick co rne rs. Just com ing off tra ining w hee ls on his Y amaha PW5 0, 5-yearo ld Will Needham took one loo k at th e track an d told his dad he was ready to race . And ready he was : Needham too k the holes hot in his Pee Wee (3-6) class. Coming ou t o f th e second corne r, Bryan Coute lin took the lead. Needh am nailed the thro tt le and came back in front over the small roller-type jump . Needha m held on to his lead for th e three laps and took the checkered flag. A first-p lace finish in the seco nd race earned Needham first overall for the night . Th e 65cc Beginner class was a tight race, wit h riders sliding into eac h ot her, causing lots o f place changes . At the start. Jack Hamilton , Toby Taylor, Garren Melto n, Joaquin Dydell and Carter Needham wen t flying to t he firs t corner, e ac h vying fo r the holesho t. Hamilto n came o ut o f the corner first. Taylor went down, allowing Carter to pass. The race was tight , but in the end first went to Hamilto n, second to Taylor. and third to Melto n. Mota two's start was just as w ild, w ith r iders s lid ing into e ach other and luck pulling them out. Hamilto n finished first , w ith Melton second and Carter third. Th e overall podiu m spots went to Ham ilton, Melton and Taylor. Brento's Cycle Center KTM of Bakersfield , California, had a riding class of its ow n, respe ctf ully called "Bre mo 's Old Man C lass ," w hich cons iste d o f emp loyees and pe rso nal frien ds o f o w ner Brent Needham.
