By JAMEY BLUNT WIUOW SPRINGS, CA, NOV 7 . y 10 :40 a.m ., the 146 e ntrants who'd braved the th reat of rain to attend round eight 01 the STTARS series had put practice B behind them. Most noteworthy during practice was the hard ge t-off 01 STTARS number-one plate holde r Mark Cern icky: T he Dunlop /Joe Rocket rider exited the dirt-section berm side ways and had to leap over tw o hay bales; sadly, his front whee l ca ught the second one, and over the bars he went. Cemicky came stra ight down on the back of his head and th en tum- ble d . luckily, his Arai helmet wa s up to the task; howeve r, he now nee ds a new o ne . Ce rnicky later suffered a flat tire in the 450c( race w hile r unning close to the front, an d in the O pe n class he suffered a mec hanical as wel l. Re membe r t he name C D. Howe ll. At just over 16 years of age , he 's a supermoto up-andcomer. On his Am e rican Supe rca mpfWh lte Brothers Honda. Howell put on a show in the Del Arno Motorsports 250cc main event. Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Jell Matiasevich led the field into tum one, followed by Howell, Cernicky, and Pro Circuit's jeff Hoeppner. Three turns in, Howell took ove r up front and never loo ked back. Cernicky battled with Mat iasevich for sec ond , whic h we nt to Matiasevich . Marzocch i/Hah m Motorspo rts' Gary Trachy finished lap o ne in sixth but was on the mo ve and finished in third . Cernicky came home fourth . Hoeppner went down in the dirt section and finished fifth. Supermotoracer.com 's Scott Hoffman took sixth . Just how last was Howell? At the finish, he had a 16:84-second gap back to seco nd place. T he n, e nteri ng the dirt section for the first time , Drew shot to the inside to take the po int away fro m Bagnis. The ru nning o rd er at the en d of lap one was Dre w, Bagnis, Ho lde n, Motomaste r's Do n Hart , Pro Valve's Trac hy, and Cern icky. Six laps in, Trachy was up to th ird , and Joke r Machine's josh Chisum was moving up as wel l. Trachy caught the leaders by the final lap and made a last-ditch effort ente ring the dirt , only to have Bagnis and himsel f go down. Dre w cruise d to vic tory, Bagnls kept his mount run ning and he ld on to second, and Holde n got back by Trachy lor third. In the O pen Expert con tes t , Bagnis bro ught out the new Husky 630 to lead the pack off the line , over D rew, Trachy, C hisum and just in Ross. Try as he might , Dre w 's 450cc Ho nda cou ldn't match the power of the Husky. For 10 laps, Drew pressured Bagnis, who turned a fastest lap of one minute and 18.7 seco nds en ro ute to victory. Trachy in tum was knocking on Drew's door until lap seven, when he hit a rock on the track and went do wn ; he got up and finished third . Davis, an O pen A rider, scored in at one hour, 4 1 minutes and five seconds. "I had a good ride - no lalls all day," the 37year-old Davis said . " \ th ought I may have gonen second. I was so surprised. I didn't have a clue ." "First of all, luck," Davis re plied when asked what might have contributed t o his win . "Second of all, my bike change . I've been racing my Suzuki RM-Z2S0. which I really like, but my friend Glen [Myatt] let me borrow his practice bike , which is a KTM SX 450, just to see il I liked it. Finishing 31 seconds behind Davis was his close friend Myatt , an AA rider. Myatt started o ut t he day strong, posting the fastest lap time of the event, but he seemed to lose momentum somewhere along the trail and wound up tak ing a second-place finish. " It was a fun race ," Myatt said , "a nd the trails were in good shape . but they were pretty rough , which made it physically demanding. But I had a great time racing w ith Wesley [Wyatt] and Cha d [Earl] . I want to congratulate Frank on his win!" Taking third , only four seconds down from Myatt, was Open A racer Taylor Reynolds. who has been a frequent top-five finisher recent ly and has been providing some ex treme competition for the AA racers. Battling for fourth overall and a class w in we re Open B racers Lee Everett and Dust in Stevens. Everett took the honors, cloc king in at o ne ho u r, 44 minutes and 26 seconds , leaving Ste vens in fift h ove ra ll and second in the Open B class. Sixth went to A 20 0cc ri d e r Will McConnell , who finis hed in one hour, 46 minutes and 39 seconds. T hree seconds down in seventh was Open A racer Lucas Comeaux, on his new Yamaha. Dwight Rudde r took eighth overall, the Se nior-class wi n and the O ve r all Special Class w in. Rounding out the top 10 were Vet A rider Dare n Pittman in ninth, with a time of one ho ur, ..' 47 minutes and 31 seconds, and his fellow Vet A ride r Adrian Gervais, wh o stayed with in th ree seconds of Pittman throughout the day but couldn't seem to dose in enough for the pass . Wit h o nly tw o ha re scrambles left in t he SERA season, some riders are trying to collect as many points as possible to secure their yearend position s. On ly a few class titles have been dec ided , so the last two events are critical for some riders .
