The eve nt always attracts a handlul 01 fo reign ride rs . and th is year two of Costa Rica's top riders, Alejandro Rojas and AJex Vique x , made the trip to Florida to compete. Both riders are be ing mentored by Emesto Fonseca's father, Edwin Lobo, who was also on hand . Viquex won the highly competitive 12Scc NExpert Stock class in supercross and backed it up with a second place in the same division in the mo tocross event. Rojas had the speed to run up front in the Youth classes bu t suffered a hand injury with a crash in the supercross tha t kept him out for the remainder of the week. James Stewa rt created quite a buzz in the pits when he showed up in his trick, new $280,000 lamborghini Murcielago - one 01supposedly only two yellow mod els in the country. Bubba ma de a high-speed pass down the road that runs past the track on his way out 01 the lad illy, much to the delight 01 the crowd that was attend ing the riders' meetin g that was go ing on at the time . Team G reen's mo tocross supe rviso r, Craig Martin. wa s on han d for his final o fficial event with Kawasaki. Martin had been w ith Team G ree n for almost nine years be fore deciding to pursue an opportunity to beco me part owner o f O ak Hill Motocro ss Park in Dec atu r, Texas - the site 01 the GNC final. Mart in is succeeded by Dave Do w land , who was previ o usly w ith Tea m G reen as a technician from 1992-96 belore go ing on to a st int with an Indy car team in the CHAMP se ries . The crew Irom F!MX Magazine, a region al pub lication based in Florida, teamed up with Suzuki's Cole Gress and published a daily newspaper at th is year's race - dubbed the Suzuld Daily Tribune - which included the previous day 's res ults. rider and industry interviews. and the schedule lo r the upcoming days' events. It was the first time a daily newspape ' has been published at an amateur National, and it was widely praised by everyone in attendance. Unlimited Sports continued the re cent trend of making no ticeable improve me nts to the facility for this year's race, with the most visible change being the addition 01 roughly $SO,OOO w o rt h 01 landscaping around the facility. including a number of large pa lm trees that were strategically placed aro und the ve nue. Torrential rains drenched the area o n Wednesday evening. du mp ing nearly six inches of w ater on the track and creating a cou ple of large "lakes " in the pits. The track crew, led by Jason Dodds, did an amazi ng job 01 clearing all the track prior to the start 01 the motocross event on Thursday morning, and th e track was nearly perfect lor the remainder 01 the week.
