He earned an A+ for his second win of this season in the Junior B division - which was no e asy task , since th e Pirelli/Moose/Maxxis/American Patr iot Get aways-supported Cross Country Motorsport s Championsh ip e ntertains youth from Indiana, Illinois, Alabam a, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tenness ee. The Thor/YMI/Pro Taper-sponsored Nash didn't ramble aro und; he wor ke d his w ay up from a bad start and was in fourth place by the end of t he first lap. Thre e laps later, he found himself in the lead, and he put in an aweso me ride; he was the o nly rider in his class to make seven laps. After six laps, DC Cycle Racing-supported Richard Brewer finished junior B in th ird place. Somebody slid into him and knoc ke d him into a tree, giving Shane Pen a a chance at the lead. "So rne o ne's bike landed right o n top of mine," said Ashburn. "Afte r that. Shane led me around for most of the time unt il th e last lap. I finall y got the lead , but he w as o n me the whole time ." Unfortunately for Pena. the freshly laid 2 1/2 miles of trail had a lot of ruts, making it difficult fo r him pass. Ho w ever, he finished w ith an impre ssive se co nd place in junior A and wa s only four seconds down from Ashburn . " I had a really good ride , and I like d t he tra ck a lot," Danie l Ritte r said, "but the first lap, I went down a few times. That set me back to KTM-mounted Austin Smith got first place by running rea lly fast . He got t he ho leshot, made 13 laps in 21 minutes . and won the Pe e Wee (7-8) d ivision. He claimed his favorite part was the mud . o nda-mounte d Shawn Haberlock was simply too much for th e compe tition at th e final round of t he Oregon Sta te Motocross Cha mp ionship Ser ies. The fo rme r minicycle speedster capt ure d dual overall wins at the ser ies finale, posting the 250cc and Before The Hill Intermedi ate -class victo ries . Ha be rlock's only competition came from KTM ride r Pet e Sannan, who re centl y returned to racing afte r an injury-induced layoff. Sannan ra n in Habe rlock's shadow for much of t he day. Although Sannan spent the day riding under "exhibition" status , the 17-year-old from Albany was the only rider all day to put a wheel ahead of the 14-year-old Haberlock. The best of their battles cam e in th e second Before The Hill Intermediate mot o . Habe rlock bo lted to the he ad of the pack , but Sannan , riding a 125cc tw o -st ro ke KT M, ove rca me a poor start to move up and challenge Haberlock late in the race. Overall , Haberlock led the way with a two -mote sweep. Y amaha ride rs Travis McMackin and Jeff Alboucq trailed Haberl ock overall. While Afboucq ran an official second in the early stages of moto two , he cou ldn't hold back t he ch allenges from McMack in, and the Wash ington ride r placed third overall, followed by Aaron McClinton and Kevin Petrushkin . Habe rlock came back a few races late r to do the same to th e field of 2S0cc Inte rmediate and junior riders. Alboucq had tw o good rides, but he w as overshadowed by Hahe rlock in both mot os and placed 2 ~2 in the Intermediate portion . Yamaha rider Bra d Bat ch elor got grea t starts all day and was the top performer in th e adjoin ed Jun ior class; the ride r fro m Cottage Grove finished o ut in front of the field of junior riders in both mote s to lead Ryan Hop son , jare d Ronnie, Scott Smith and Mike Dah lman ove rall. Suzuki-mounted William See has bee n one of the series ' mo st impressive pe rformers.
