Un ited States Versus The World Speedway Fast Fridays Speedway USA Survives World War! By M. SOBER AUBURN, CA, OCT. 30 I n the fourt h annual running of the United States Versus The World Speedway spectacular, the Califomia boys pushed their combined overall record to 4-0 with a decisive 78-69 victory. In this year's event the World team kept it fairly dose early on and was still within striking distance at 29-25 through nine heat races but fell apart in the fifth and sixth rounds. The Wo rld Team turned a virt ua l rou t o f 72-49 into the more respectable final score o f 78-69 when Er ic C arr illo , riding for Englan d because o f his dual citize nship, tea med up with Steve "T he Co cky Aust ralian" Johnston to swe ep the po ints -rich A main eve nt . Bobby "T he Blaze " He dd en . w ho ope ned his nigh t wi th five straigh t heat w ins. fell in the firs t turn and was no t a factor in th is yea r's final ra ce . In th e first ro und, He dd en , C harlie "The Edge " Venegas and Carrillo collected th e wins, and the United States led, 12-6. In round two. Carrillo and Jo hnston teamed up to give the World a rare heat sw e e p and, combined with Castagna 's victory in heat three, the World closed to within two points. at 20-1 6 . In round three, Hed den and Venegas came through with wins again, but with Poland's Daiez Sledge collecting a win and Sweden's Jonas Davidsson and Johnston nailing down a couple of two-point second-place results, the round was a wash, and the score moved to 29-25 . In the open ing ride of the fourth round , Castagna led Bobby and Tommy Hedden until the third lap, when he fell, collecting Tommy in the process and bringing out the red nag. The race was called , the two Heddens were given the top two finishing points, and the USA opened its lead to 34-26. Two heats later, Chris Kerr and Venegas pulled out the SlOpS and swept Sledge and Polish National Bartek Bardecki to increase the U.S. lead to 42·30. In round five, both teams tallied nine points I. Down by 12 points entering the final round. the World team desperately needed to close the gap and so inserted Carrillo and Johnston as tactical reserves. The maneuver failed to reap any rewards, as the U.S. team fo ught them even in the first two heats and then dominated them in the final, with Yarrow taking the win and Bart Ba st cleverly coming from las t to second place to complete the sweep. With the score settled at 62-46, th e Wo rld need ed to dominate the A and B mains to have a shot at the win. However, w ith Bast saving his bes t fo r last and raking th e win in the B main, and w ith te ammate Ven egas right be hind him, th e World was math e matically eliminate d. B main-event winner Bart Bast looks back over his shoulder at teammate Charlie Venegas, who finished a close second, giving the USA the event win. Cisneros flashed through the pipes for the w in. Cisneros began to pull away, w hile Vetere came raging through to challenge Winschel for second. The race was all C isneros' , however, as he cruised home with w in numb er two - and the overall 8 5cc ( 12- 15) t itle. Enter Jared Partridge. t he youngest of the th ree motocross-rac ing Partridge br others. It was n't so long ago that Part ridge made the jump to th e big bikes, hopping into the Novice/Junior class, and quickly start ed winning. No w he 's an Intermedia te , and the winning is co ntinuing. Partridge was entered in I25cc Intermediate and Open Intermed iate classes on Sunday, and www.cyclenews.com he won th e m both . T hose top three stayed very close for the first lap, as Ga rrett Cisneros was holding 0(( Eric Barlow and Ryan Bro w n in a wild b rawl fo r fo u rt h. Midr ace , Partridge started to pull away, leaving Rodriguez and Brisk in a tight scra p for se cond. Partridge won moto one, and Rodr iguez placed second. Tony Esposito came charging up through the pac k all the way to th ird . Partridge rocked the field w ith his second st raight holes hot in mo te t w o . Rod riguez , Barlo w and Brown w e re trying to chase him down. This race was even easier for Partridge, as he took an im med iate lead . Rodriguez settled into a so lid sec ond, and Brisk made a pass on Bartow in the whoops to secure th ird . Th at was how they wo uld finish, with Partridge's sec o nd straight wire -to- wire vict o ry guaranteei ng him t he 125cc In termediate crown .
