dropped for moto o ne. Two -time WNYMA
number-one Expe rt rid er Donny Schmidt
(1 99 1, '92 ) o utgu nned one -time WNYMA
numbe r-o ne Expert ride r Scott Ghidiu ( 1997)
for the old-school holeshot. Andrew Walsh, Jim
C arv er, Joe Nothnagle , Jeff Burdon , Ryan
Gurtert and Chris Lenzi followed, ahead of the
holeshot king himself, three-tune WNYMA
number-one Expert rider Joe Ellington ( 1994.

with Carve r, Burdon, Lenzi and Guttari exiting
the orcha rd in tow. Carve r went off course and
down but not out, allowing Schmidt to extend
his lead to 10 seconds ove r Burdon, Le nzi and a
rebo unding Ellington. Th e battle was o n for
second place , as Lenz i powered past Burdon ,
while Ellington pulled bar to bar with Burdon to
battle for ,hird . Schmidt had checked out like
an overdue library book to take the checkered
flag solo , bu t t he m xr ide .com-spo nsor ed
Ellington ra llied back to ta ke se co nd place,
t hri lling t he spectators. Lenzi. Burdon and
Guttari notched top-fives , with Gh id iu,
Noth nagle, Walsh, and Carver ,railing.
Schmidt roo sted his way to the mo ta- two
holesho t, with Ghidiu and Burdon bump ing bars
over secon d place. Carver made a sweet inside
move to relieve Burd on o f his third -p lace
running spot and began the climb to catch
Ghidiu. Ellington was back in t he mix, as he
picked up one or tw o spo ts every lap an d
probably wishing he was getting better starts .
Meanwhile , Schmidt was "desecrating t his
very ta lented Plus 25 A class," as WNYM A
annou ncer par e xcelle nce Thomas Threadgill
put it, adding tha t, since these guys w ere on
Bacc Suzukis, 'he only trip le they 'd tackle was
an Ice crea m cone on the way home .
Gh idi u loo ke d st ro ng and fo cu se d o n
hanging on to that we ll-earne d seco nd place,
but "Outback Joe" Ellington made a move or
three out back in the ap ple orchard to wrestle
second spot away with one lap to go. Le nzi had
worked his way back past Burdon to challenge
and outco mer Carver, giving him a slight shot at
catching Ghidiu.
O n 'he last lap, Ellingto n was fend ing off
Ghidiu for seco nd, while Lenzi was busy holding
off multiple challenges from Carver and Burdon
amid the awesome Genesee County fall foliage.
Schm idt ( I - I) topp e d the class for first
overall, wh ile Ellington (2-2), Le nzi (3-4), Ghidiu
(6-3) and Burdon (4-6) were saddled with top Ilve finishes.

his was not your average day at the beach!
KTM 's Pat Garra han showed the proper
way to play in the sand at round nine of District
36's Cross Country Series.
After a midpack start , Garrahan powered his
KTM 450
a com fortable lead before ' he firs'
lap was over and held the to p spot to the end
of the 10-lap race. He appeared to be much
more at hom e in th e sa nd t han did his
competitors. Many riders had never ridden the
sand. There was a lot of falling over going on,
especiallyin the corne rs at the beginning of the
race, but afte r a co uple of laps, the riders we re
catching on . The re al battle was for seco nd,
with a lot of position-swapping taking place .
Vet rider Eric Du c r ay, ri ding a NorCal
Motorsports Honda CRF450R, worked his way
up fro m a midpack start to take seco nd from
up-and-coming 1 8-year~0Id rider Alex Gragg on
th e seventh lap. Gragg, fr om Gra nt s Pass,
Oregon, showed what a two -stroke could do in
the sand, riding his 10<250 a third-place finish.
"I pitted three times - once for goggles and
tw ice for gas," Gragg said. "I finished with less
than half an inch of gas in the lank. John Wear
and I too k turns crash ing and passing each other
on the first lap, a couple times each."
We ar placed fourth overall. Only the 'op
four riders got in 10 laps.
The re were more t han a few casualties.
Nolan Erwin got the holeshot , with early on rt
appeared he might gamer a top-fIVe finish, but

the sand proved to be a tough competitor. His
bike started making some no ises, and by the
eighth lap it was sounding like coins rattling in a
coffee can; he had thrown a rod .
Kawasaki Team Gree n's C raig Wesner held
second for a couple of laps and was running in the
top five when he lost hisdutch on the sixth lap.
"I think the clutch was slipping for a while,"
Wesner reported, "but it was hard to ' ell with
all the tire spin in the sand ."
After getting tu rned a ro un d in t he firs t
comer after the start, Fairfield Cycle Ce nte r 's
Suzuki-mounted Rod Kriess also had his chance
at seco nd, hanging on to that spot for a couple
of laps before running out of gas on the sixth lap.
In a race where displacem en t seem ed to
count, 14-year-old Jonathan Davis, riding fo r
Mach I Mot o rspo rt s, impress ed eve ryo ne by
ove ralling the 200cc B division on his KTM 105.
He seemed to be just light e noug h and fast
enough to keep the bike on top of the sand; in
fact, he appeared to be almost floating acro ss it.
Allin all, it was a beaut ifulday at 'he beach!
