T his yea rs' eve nt was even more inte rnatio nal than usual; it drew riders fro m Finland, New Zealand and England , as w e ll as the cus tomary great West Coast representation. The standout rider of the day was Rio Oso , California 's Dave Coupe , on a very fast Maico . T he Parts Unlimited re p entered the Over 40 Expert and Gra n Prix 500 cc classes . At days' end, he had amassed four holeshots and fo ur victo ries over so me very fine competition. In the O ver 40 Expert class, very fast Honda pilot Steve Parker ca me closest to besting Coupe . Coming home t hird in t he first mota was Maico-mounted Todd Kohlmeister, but he had di fficulties in mo to two , fin ishing a d isappo int ing se ve nt h . Ano t her Maico man, Don Garner, racked up a 6-4 pe rfo rmance to gai n t hir d overa ll, be hi nd Pa r ke r. T he Gra n Prix SOOcc cla ss w as muc h the same story, but wit h a different c a st of characters. Early contender John Dauth, on a Husqvarna, crashed and co llected some o ther ride rs. Taking over second after that mishap was Mon t esa-mo un ted Brett Miller, w ho found himself in a Maico sandwich, between a hardcharging Garner in third and the elusive Coupe out front . That's the way the first mot a finished. In the seco nd moto, Cou pe again cha rged hard to the first corner, but th is time Crackne ll fina lly got his Maico poin ted in the rig ht d irection and fe ll in behind . Miller tried to find a way around Cracknell at every opportunity but w as unsuccessfu l and had to be content with third . The overall w ent to Coupe, w ith Miller second and a consistent Garner (3-4) ge tting the nod for third overall. Pa r ke r 's Hon da carried him to a n overwhelming double mota victory in the Ultima 500cc Expert class, afte r two holeshots.
