Over The Hill Gang Race Starwest MX Park Gomez Going, Going - Gonel By CHRIS CUMBO MORENO VALLEY, CA, OCT. 10 coa ,. cloudy morn ing brought out the Over The Hill Gang racers, ready to run an aver age o f 10 ho t lap s! The gan g pu t s o n great races , and club preside nt John Holm an does a A t er r ific job of providing th e glue for th e members to bo nd. "I like the camaraderie in the club," said Over 38 Intermediate Arnie D avis, " and I get to ride with guys of similar spee ds and abilities . In my class, anyone of us cou ld win on any given day. Just trying not to make any mistakes makes for a competiti ve class. You know, if one of us falls, we' re right back up and into the thick of it ASAP!" Kon Baur sat on the line with Pr os and the rest of the Expe rts. Baur led all the classes for half a lap on t he high- jum ping tra ck . Matt Cleveland sho we d why he's a Pro by riding with flaw less style. Cleve land mo ved from fo urth to first with his elbows up high and real ly leaning the bike , churning the tacky track w it h his rear t ire. Cleve land showed the fans how to clear one double that none of the other riders would att empt, and he'd wh ip the bike over the finish line to pull off an imp ressive lead on the other classes. YZ250- mo unte d Mark "T he Ice man" Stuen (compe ting in the same mo to ) raced past the lead er, Bau r, along th e back sectio n , showi ng an agg ressive attack-position bo dy style, which paid off fo r the top pod ium finish in his class. Eric Brust was also able to pass Baur just befo re the white flag. After the finish-line ta bleto p, Brust came around too hot into the berm and almost too k out a pole , but he held on to secon d place . Beginne r Kyle Gom e z dre w t he holeshot card . Gom ez put some hurtin' on Andy Jenkins, vying for t hat first- turn ru t , and th e n Go me z was on his way, putting a larger and larger gap between him se lf and second- p laced Ric k Rinehart . Gom ez did clear the back and fron t ta bletops. Jus t w hen t he fan s started to sit down, he step ped it up and nailed the dou ble along the highway, which stood the fans back up for the rest of the moto. In t he second mot a , Gomez powe re d ou t fro nt again, follow ed by Andy Laviolette . Herb Lloyd tucked into third . Gomez we nt on to put a big do uble w hamm y on his class. Now it looks like Gomez 's classmates will have to step it up a notch or two. In t he Over 38 Interme diate cl ass, Jo e Crouch pou nded out two grea t sta rts but found himself under re lentless press ure by Pat Samud io in the second moto, and Crouch re linquished the overall. Eric Barr was dealt three stalls and one off-the-track card , but he still salvaged the last pod ium spot - in a class that is noted for getting back into the thick of it ASAP. RESULTS BEG: I .
