Vintage Dirt Track Racing Association Nationals Round ' 5: Waco Eagles Short Track Round '6: Waco Eogles Hall Mile By CHARLIE SCHOLL WACO, TX, SEPT. 25·26 S aturday started out cool and overcast. with a high chance of rain. but it all came together (or a great weekend of racing at the Waco , Texas, track for the AMA-sanctioned VDTRANationals. There were more than I5 classes on each day of racing . with more tha n 105 entrants in attendance, which made fo r a lot of e xciting racing over the two days. Kenneth Creasy came out smoking and beat Randy Carthel in the O pen Pro Twins contest, w ith James Henry fin ishing in the third spot in the short track. O n the half mile, C reasy once again won th at first -place spot , this ti me over AI Moriarty. w ith Henry in third. In t he Modern O pe n Unlimite d-class half mile . th ere w as quite a bit of mixing it up on th e trac k among the six Pro racers. Butch Brandon started o ut in third but w as passed by Rob ert England , Ken Creasy, Willard Kelley and Kurt Boehlke. Bra ndon worked his w ay back up to seco nd place, but w ith all the passing going on, it was anybody's guess as to who w o uld come out in first . Steve Nich ols raced hard for that spot, held on to it, and we nt on to take the w in. T he 600cc Amate ur half mile sta rte d out with Glen McNamara getting the holesho t and Ste ve England and Dick Ford follow ing closel y behind . Charles Scholl got a slow start, but he made up fo r it when he started closing in on the three fro nt-r un ne rs and pulled up to second place , behind Dick Ford , w ho had worked his w ay to t he front by pas sing McN am ar a and England. Fo rd go t a surp rise w hen Scholl passed him coming out of turn tw o on the next-to-final lap. Scholl we nt o n to win. Randy " Re cki nball" Dani el had t wo great days of racing in the 650cc Stocker class , in both the short track and the half mile ; he w as able to ge t th e holes ho t and ho ld on to first place in both races. Red River Cha llenge Cent ra l Matarcycle Roadracing Association Championship Seri e s Round 4: Oak Hill Race w a y Grant Clinches at Oak Hill By SHAN MOORE HENDERSON, TX, SEPT. 26 "I don 't care w ho w ins the race and I don 't care where 1 finish, just as long as I beat Danny," Je ff G ra nt said be fore the fina l Red River Challe nge Expert race of the year, when aske d abou t his chances of winning the series championship. Going into the final round at Oak Hill Raceway near Henderson , Texas, Gran t and Dann y Dom inguez were tied for t he po ints lead, and w hichever one finished ahead of the other wou ld w in the championship. "If J am in good shape, 1 migh t go for t he win ," Grant added. "But I'm not going to take any chances ." As it turned o ut, Grant was in ve ry good shape, w hich was good news for him and bad ne w s fo r Do mi ngu e z . G ra nt grabbed the holeshot at t he start and never looked back w ell, almost never looked back. "Abo ut halfway through the race, " Gr ant 42 admitted. "I peeked over at tu rn eight when I was at tu rn five and I saw him, and I thought, ' O kay , thi s is good - just don 't lo se concentration.' Other than that, I pretty much stayed focused ." Grant led from start to finish, winning by a 28.788-s econd marg in, which might have made for a boring race had Tyler McDonald no t added a bit of su spe nse . From a last-p lace start, t he 14-year-old moved his Team K&N Y amaha up through the ranks and eventually passed Suzuki SV650-mounted C raig Montgom ery for second overall. McDonald turned the fastest lap of the rac e , a I :37. 9 30 , and w he n he caug ht Montgomery, he swept wide through turn one and used the drive to pass t he Suzuki rider going into two. At the checkers, Grant took the win and the $500 firs t -place prize th at went with it, in additio n to the series cham pionsh ip. "T he black stuff, es pe cially coming out of turn seve n, was really, re ally slick, so it w as kind of like at Cresson - just be really smooth," Grant said. "T he Dunlop t ires wo r ked great , and o nce again I just staye d smoot h, smoo th, smooth and tr ied to ma ke up all my gro und w it h the bike straight up and do wn and avo id the black stuff." In the No vice division, Yamaha YZF-R6 rider Josh Lowthorp took the ea rly lead, but he was passed by Suzuki GSX-R600 rider Seth Cooke o n lap tw o . O n lap three, Chris Romero started to make his mo ve, puttin g his Suzuki SV650 into second place , ahead of Lowt ho rp. Romero then set his sights on ree ling in Cooke, setting the fastest lap oft he race , a I:42.S 12, in the process. After taking the lead, Romero cruised to an 18- second advantage at th e finis h. Marcus McBain (Suz). Ne w Eng la nd Tra il Riders Association Round '2: Nutmeg Scramblers Motorcycle Club Bobriwka Hare Scrambles Jalbert Tops It Off With Nutmeg Win By T.J. SWISTRO COLEBROOK, CT, SEPT. 26 A II Matt Jalbert needed at round 12 was 20 r"\p oi nt s t o cl inch t he 20 04 N ETRA Hare Scrambles Championship. But he we nt on e bet te r, running away w ith his eighth win of the season . The race w as held at the "Bobriw ka" Boy Scout Camp in northwe stern Connecticut and w as hosted by th e Nutm eg Scramblers. T he club constructed a 6.7-mile racetrack o n t he ca mp's 350 acres of virgin fo re st in less than two months - w hich is pretty amaz ing, conside ring the club is brand new this yea r and has less than 20 members. T he race c o urs e wo und its wa y th rough pi ne - t r e e fo re s t s, stream c ross ings , rock gardens, logs and mud ho les, which mad e for so me good, old-fashione d New England racing. At I:45 p.m., the green nag new, and D.J. US gra bbed the holeshot on his RER Motorcity KTM. Cycle Connection's Bo b Santheson made a qu ick move in turn three to take over second, and Allsop-sponsored Wes Clarke Look the third spot as they ducked into the w oods in turn four. At the end of lap one, Lis emerged in the point position w it h a 53 -second le ad over fellow RER rider Jalbert, and back another I I seconds w as KTM Enduro ace Anthony Geraci. Cla rk e and Yamaha pilot Jeff Staples ro unded out the top five . 40th Anniversary It loo ked as tho ugh Lis was going to have a great day lead ing the rest of the field and setting the fastest lap time of the day. nearly a minute better than anyone else. However, by the third lap, Moo se Racing's Jalbert had closed the gap and was now glued to Us' rear fender. Clarke also made a move around Geraci and was now sitting in third, w ith Ge raci fourth and Staples flfth. By the fourth lap, Jalbert had taken over the le ad and was beginning to pull away. C-Cycle Suspension 's Lis settled into second . Cla rke , Geraci and Staples roun ded out the top five. If Jalbe rt co uld hold his lead to the finis h, he w o u ld be c o m e the ne xt N ew Engla nd cham pio n. And just like that, he emerged into the final grasstrack before the finish with no one else in sight . The chec kers waved fo r the new champ, and as the crow d applauded, he was rushe d by family and friends. He finished w ith mo re than a two-min ute gap on Clarke a nd three minutes ahead of Gera ci. Lis and Stap les ro unded out the top five. The generous do nations to the riders of the morning's Youth race by Clarke MFG , Pro Clean 1000, Spectro Oi ls, Wiseco Pistons, Cometic Gaskets, Pro Circuit, Scott Goggle s, Moose Racing and RER Motorci ty are much appreciated.
