Eddie Mu lder's West Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series
Jimmy Wood (66E) won the Digger Helm Pro 600cc
main, leodin~ all 20 laps and retaking the track
record at Wi llow Spring s' Walt James Stadium .
te r the huge success of Eddie Mulder 's West
Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series' sixth round at
Willow Springs, it was no wonder that an even
larger turnout showed up for the season finale,
ou nd seven, on t he same beloved three eighths-mile, banked oval. Not one but two water trucks
were employed to kee p the track as perfectly prep ped as
possible for the 2S2 entrants w ho filled the grids of the 24
heat races . Parking was at such a premium that many racers had to pit as far away as the next co unty. As at each
and every round, the big yellow A&A bus, a staple at dirt
track races , was on hand to provide whatever help the racers might require. Due to the large turnout, Mulder stuc k
to a strict sched ule; with practice and the heats completed,
the Pro semi rolled to the line at exactly 3 p.m.
With extra sponsor money from Digge r Helm, Bartels'
Harley-Dav idson , Saddlemen, Ron Wood, Motion Pro and
Mulder himself, the Pro purse was at the $6000 mar k.
Some 30 Pros fought through four heat races for one of 14
spots in the main. The last two of these wo uld have to
come th rough the Motion Pro semifinal.
jimmy McNeil led the pack into turn one , followed by
Stevie Bonsey, with 12 hungry Pro 's on their hee ls. jimmy
Hiquera and jeff Eklund made runs to ward the front , but it
was Bonsey who took the lead on lap four and never looked
back, and Hiquera who would land the final transfer.
