• Blackwell Again In Illinois National HS F Briefly... J.R. Schnabel (Yamalha) won the O pe n Pro A main even t at the Skip Van Leeu wenITom Cates Memorial Sho rt Track at the Del Mar Fairgrou nds in Del Mar, Califo rnia, on O ctober 16. Jethro Halbert (Honda) finished second, and Jimmy Wood (Ho nda) finished third . Rick Hocking (Yamaha) won the O pe n Vintage A main eve nt, and Bradley Spencer (Yamaha) won the Top Gun 4S0cc main event. MF Suzuki's Doug Blackwell closed ou t the 2004 AMA Nation al Hare Scrambles seaso n with a win at the 10th and final ro und of the series in Crab Orchard , Illinois, on October 17. The win was Blackwell's seco nd straight in the series and it assured him of third overall in the final standings . Jason Raines, who wrapped up the Hare Scrambles title two weeks ago in Indiana, skipped the ra ce to rest his injured sho ulde r and to concentrate on the final GNCC event the upcoming wee kend in Crawfordsville, Illinois. Kawasaki Team Green's Chuck Woodford and Throttlehead .com Kawasaki's Josh McLevy pushed Blackwell early, but the 1998 and '99 Hare Scrambl es National champ pulled away in the end, winning by nearly a minute and a half. After taking a wrong turn on the trail during the first lap, Woodford and McLevy sett led into second and th ird place, respectively, and cruised , unchallenged , to the finish, while Kawasaki rider Cole Calkins finished fourth , nearly 10 minute s back. Fifth place and top Sen ior A rider was Suzuki-mounted Scott Martin, while top U.S. tr ials rider David Chav es of Spain finished e ighth overall in o nly his second offroad event riding the new Sherco fo urstroke Enduro mode l. Woodfor d finished ou t the year in second place. Doug Blackwell closed aut the '04 National Hare Scra mb le s Series with a win in Illinois. Shan Moore six-time champion took the pole and the win with a final round victory over Chris Att ack Kawasaki's Josh Hayes won the lion's share of the $1 50,000 purs e for the seco nd year in a row in th e Toyota 200 at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamo nd, California, on October 17, taking ho me $50 ,000 for his victory on a typically bluste ry day in Southern California's high desert. Hayes finished almost a full lap alhead of Lion Racing's Michael Barnes, on th e Car ry Andrews-tuned Suzuki GSXRIOOO, and the second Attack Kawasaki of Australian Ben Attard. Barnes too k home a check for $30,000, with Atta rd tak ing home $ 10,000. Earlier in the day, Rich Oliver decimate d the field in the Road Racing World 250/50 Gra nd Prix. At the end of the 50mile, 20-lap even t , the five-time AMA 2S0cc Grand Prix Champion had crushed the field to take home $3500 for the win. Michael Mont oya made an impre ssive ru n through the field to take second ahead of Mark Watts . ~~:::::::=--~~- Hand. McBride's top performance for the weekend was a 5.92 at 243 mph as Hand hit a career-best 6. 10 e.t. at 234 mph. The PMFR Funnybike battle got close r as reigning cham p Travis Davis took ou t po ints leader and numbe r-one qua lifier Korry Hogan in the final, 6.64 to 6.71. Funnybike competition was marred by the qua lifying cra sh of Tim Bo rrall, w ho go t ou t of shape right off the line and went into a tire barrier at spe ed. Borrall suffered a broke n wr ist and shoulder in the accident. Charlie Farrar saw his unbeaten streak snapped in Lectron Pro Modified as Mimmo Marciano took the w in over Steve Smithers . In Accel Pro Stock , veteran and number-one qualifier Paul Gast took his first win in his third str aight finalround appearance when final-round opponent Steve Johnson went through the lights when staging the K&N Filters Suzuki. The Mickey Thompson Streetbike Shootout class saw Barry Henson take his fourth stra ight win on his Velocity Racing __ _. - -----------1[2 __. Rya n Schn ih: ~ ~ ::; iIi § :0 a: Hayabusa, beating four-time champ Kent Stotz on a holeshot, 7.379 to Stotz's quicker 7.371. Stotz earlier set the speed record to 200.11 mph on the Honda CBR II OOXX. Rick McWaters took his third straight win in Hot Rod Cruiser on the Patrick Racing Yamaha Warr ior and set the elapsed time record to 9.238 seconds. McWaters ' final round win over teammate Mark Underwood put him in the points lead, pushing Underwood back to second. Other winners include Tim Bixler in Super Eliminator, Mike Konopacki in Schnitz Top Gas, Mark Coulson in MTC Super Comp, Scott Parker in RC Components Super Gas, Holly Wallace in Dynatek Pro ET and Darren Burnett in Street IT Matt Polito Da le Corse r , the brother of former World and AMASuperbike Champion Troy Corser, has started Corser Concepts. a motorcycle tour business in Australia that he hopes to also grow into a riding school along the lines of Danny Walker 's American Supercamp. For starters, Corser's company is currently offering a five-day tour that starts in Melbourne, Australia, and makes its way up the Gold Coast to the annual Y amaha Tribe gathering. The CMA/Clawso n Moto rsports California Supercross is set to take place November 5-7 in Fresno, California, and the entry list already includes eight-time National Champ ion Jeremy McGra th, according to event promoters. The event will be held in downtown Fresno's Grizzlies Stadium. Other riders slated to compete are Eric Sorby, Fresno's own Rusty Ho lland,Justin Buckelew, Billy Laninovich and KTM's newest factory rider, Mike Alessi. Pros will run heat races in 12Sccand 250cc classes before their respective main events, and the grand finale will be a "Bo unty Hunte r" main event where the top qualifiersfrom both classes compete fo r the lion's shane of the $20,000 purse .
