AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Se ries Awards Ceremony: Washougal Motocross Park Webster, Huffman Crowned at Washougal By CLAY LtGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, SEPT. 12 T"he rain-shortened AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Series I is comp lete . Wit h four rounds in the books and the series finaJe at Mountai n View Cycle Park canceled due to rain, series awa rds were handed out at the completion of round eight of the AMA District 27 Motocross Series at Washouga l Mot ocr oss Park. Kenny Webster, Ryan Huffman, Monty Ware , Jason Matt hews and Darryl Zu mstein were the to p A-class riders in the se ries and. like the rest of the series' to p perf ormers, will be recipien ts of contingency awa rds from all of the ma jor ma nufacturers, dep e nding upon which brand on whic h each rider con tes ted the series . Roseburg, O r ego n's H uffman accumu late d 89 poi nts en ro ute to earni ng the 250cc Pro-class title, picking up th ree overall wi ns and a seve nt h-p lace finish. He was fo llowed by fell ow Oregonians Matt hews (with 60 points) and Casey Daugherty. Seven ride rs q ualifie d for awards and continge ncies in t he 12Scc B class, but it was Oregon's Adam Metzler w ho snared the champ ionship in t hat class. Of a possible 100 points, Metzler led the way wit h 94 , placing second overall at Washo ugal and Ward Creek, Washington , and the n backing up those performances with w ins at Albany, Oregon, and the second of two Washougal eve nts . Todd Nelson, a w inner at Ward Creek, trailed Metzle r in th e series ove ral l. Metz ler wasn 't finished t he re ; the IS-year-old Suzuki rider also captu red the overall 2S0cc B-c1ass t itle wi th three wins and a second-place finish. Yamaha rider Danny Gubser o f Washington carted off a pair of overa ll series t itl e s , picking up t he 85cc (12- 15) and Supe rmini (12- 1S) victo ries . Perhaps the ceremony's biggest winners were the recipie nts of t he three 2004 Suzuki RMs that we re given away at the end of the day. Matt Fouts, an Inte r mediat e -class ride r, won an RM6S. At nearly 6 foot 3, Fouts was a bit too big for t he RM, bu t he 's plan ning to give it to his yo unger brother. Tyler Bunch wo n an RM8S Big Whee l. w hile th e most pr ize d mach ine . an RM125, went to Bryce Strom, who won the SScc (7- 11) Beginne r-class title. St ro m was eyeing the RMSS, bu t his father, Sta n, wasn't going to let the biggest-bore machine amo ng those given away get away from the m. ," "He' ll grow into it eventually Sta n reason ed . The drawing . called by annou ncer Brian Barnes, took less than half an ho ur to com plete . O ne unfort unate note: The name of one racer (who shall go unnamed in t his story) was d raw n for t he RM65. When he didn't respond , anot her name was called. T hat Orego nian racer had de cided to le ave be fo re th e weather wo rse ne d. In fact , this same racer 's name was called again, this time for th e to p prize - the RM125. Had this racer staye d, he wou ld have had two new Suzukis in his sta ble! "I feel that the series wen t really well," said Carolyn Huffman, w ho, along w ith her husband, Ralph, has promoted this serie s for nea rly a decade.
