In the final, O hio's hottest Pro-Sport rider, Ricky Mars hall, left the line first and led the pack. Rookie Expert Logan Myers glued himself to Marshall's rear tire but was unable to mount a ny se r io us challenge . T he re w as plent y of serious r acing going o n be h ind t he front runners, as Pro -Sport winne r Travis Sprong. F&S Harley/Suzuki-spo nsored K.C. Knodel, and Dave ' s Cycle-spo nsore d Nick Evans banged bar s for thir d. Back in sixt h, Cheza wo rked the low line wit h her big XR and was getting faste r each lap. Meanwhile , Cheza slowly inched he r way up to the Evans/Knode l battle. With Knodel mainly in th e midd le and Evans mostly up top, the low riding Cheza sneaked he r Harley tw in under the single -cylinder-mo unted duo and into third. By tha t time, the lead pair, Marshall and Myers , had chec ked out, setting an unmatchable pace . T he battle fo r t he fourt h-place mo ne y eve ntua lly w ent Evans' way. Cheza had her way with the SOScc Expert class . Entering a total o f six races between them, they managed to take three victories and th ree second places, leaving no doubt and taking few prisoners. The Open-Age Expert class pitt ed Jacobs Senior and junio r against each o the r in a battle to find o ut if age really does matt e r. In moto number on e, it w as all junio r, as he blasted o ff the concrete start on his 250cc Maico , rounding th e first turn in th e lead w ith th e "o ld m an " right behind him. For the first two laps, it was j unior leading Senior, until on the third lap, th e "o ld man" made his move and took over the lead. However, keeping up th at pace proved a litt le too much for Senior, and he falter ed o n lap four, giving junior the op ening he needed. In moto two , it was all junior fro m beg inning to end, as he again got the ho lesh ot o n his 250 , eve n beating so me Open-clas s Maico s to t he first turn . Young jaco bs pro ceeded to put on a motocross clinic, ta king first in all three classes he entered, lea ding 24 of 2S laps race d a nd ge tti ng the ho lesh ot in all five motos. Mean wh ile , Sen io r d ec id ed to pla y th e iron man role and e ntered thre e classes . Never content to just finish, Se nio r took se co nd t o Do n Garn er (o n his first ride on a borrowed Maico) in the GP SOOcc Expe rt class and first in t he lar ge st class of t he d ay, t he Ov er 40 Exp erts . Th e offi cia l "iron m an " of th e day, t hough, had to have been Todd Kohlmeister, w ho not on ly e nte red three classe s but had to race th em back to back. Russ Wyant and the Nevada Old-Time rs spen t cou nt less hou rs preparing the Fern ley track, and it was awesome! The Saturday race was capped off wit h a tr i-tip barbecue fit fo r a king (or at leas t fit fo r a bunch of tired tough guys) . Pa lum bo gave chase throughout the first mo to , but a second-mote fall re legated him to fourth overall via 2-5 finishes.
