':And my bo d y's pretty banged up, and I took a pre tty big hit to my he ad . I didn't ge t knocked ou t. I figure d I was okay and just my bo dy was hurti ng. Since t he n, th e practice se ssions have bee n so sh o rt I prob ably haven't don e more th an th re e laps in a row. In the race th ere , I was hurt ing o bvious ly, but at t he same time I was losing locus. I couldn't concentrate as muc h as I usually do, as much as I wou ld have liked . I was starting to miss my marks. Th e re was re ally nothi ng to gain. D ucati Austin's Eric Bostro m pulled o ut 01th e final race 01the year alte r Satu rday mo rn ing's pract ice. "I leel strong an d I can pull really hard , but when I push I lose all my power," Bostro m said olthe sho ulder he damaged in the first race at Road Atlanta on Se pte mber 4. "It' s really unlo rt unat e because the setu p the team has been working o n has im prove d a lot since midsumme r." Bostrom also said that Miche lin had "ste pped it up this race" and given him the best Iro nt tire he 's ever had. Bel ore go ing o ut lor the first 01the two half-ho ur morning prac t ice se ssions, Bostrom said he felt con fident and, o nce o n track, was co mfortable riding ar ou nd. But he knew on th e very first lap that he cou ldn't run at race pace . "T he pain was n't the limit ing facto r," he said. " It was th e sheer lack 01 power." With Bostrom o ut , t he Ducati Austin flag was flown by Regis Laconi and Lo re nzo Lanzi. Those two and Bos tro m ea ch had one machine prior to Bostr om's withdrawa l. With Bostro m o ut, the two Euro peans co uld share a spa re . "I was riding t he th ing as hard as yo u ca n actually ride a mo to rcycle, and I lost the front end o n every co rner of this racetrack." May went with a differe nt front tire in the second race. "It didn't have quit e the same grip o r handling chara ct e ristics 01the first tim e. It had plenty 01grip rear, unbe lieva ble grip rear. Th at's the o nly reason 1 cou ld eve n run up th ere." In the second race, May battl ed with Marty C raggilland Mike Smith and said: "I just d idn't have anyt hing lo r t hem. The last lap I was lo sing the Iro nt . I was so tired because olthe du al lormat. And I just, I was going as hard as I co uld . They just flat out beat me ." May was kee ping an eye on the cha mpio nship po ints and wanted to finish filth overall, "be cause the o nly other guy that's do ne that is Dale Quarterley [in 1995]. That means a lo t, especiallyo n the shoestring budget . Basically,the o nly way I can do that is everybody's helped out, every team, every person. People all ove r t he country have he lped me in some way. By the time he arrived at VIR, the lrame was true and the motor was Ire sh. "I had to ta ke it to Co mp uTrack and ge t Kent [Soignier] to se t up t he suspension on it and the chassis an d everything and meas- ure it and make sure the fram e or noth ing wasn't bent, and if so, stra ighte n it. Ronny Vaughan does my motors and he built that th ing. It seems to run pre tty good lo r a 5upe rstock bike ." There wasn't muc h time to set it up or get used to it. Smith had been chasing Yamaha contingency mon ey belo re sw itching to Suzuki lor the lollowing weekend's Suzu ki Cu p races at th e WERA Gran d National Finals at Road Atlanta. "T he first rac e was good , but 1was having to learn how to ride a litt le bit differen t , st ill le arn how to ride ," he said. "It's a nice , lorgiving motorcycle , gives good power. I like it. I th ink I can go last e r on it than my '04 R- I." Th ere were major se tu p changes lo r the seco nd race in w hich he mixed it up w ith Marty C raggilland Geoff May. "I was having to learn how to ride the setu p because we changed the se tup a lot lo r t he second race. I'm just trying to ge t be tter and better lor the G N F an d possibly next year. Get a little bit more infonnation. So it took me a little bit to figure out the comer speed , w hat it wanted , and trail braki ng and stuff." 4 0 t h A nniv ersary
