.. On This Sunday... Mention the name Bruce Brow n, and immediately visions o f On AnySunday pop into one 's head. Brown was the guest of honor at the Cachuma Ral ly and he kindly granted Cyete News an interview. , How did making t he movie On Any Sunday change your life? Wel l, I was no t into moto rcycles when I was a kid . Th en I got into it, and how much fun it was , met some of the racers and stuff, how they were so different than I imagined . So I tho ught, God. it wou ld be fun to try and make a mo vie about this subject . you know, and show the peo ple like they we re . I'm glad I did . Wha t a nice group o f people - which I've said a million times . You know, almost everybody th at was in the movie are still frie nds. and I see them frequently. Your favorite racetrack? O h, I think probably Ascot ! In the '60s, we 'd go there every Friday night , to the races. O ur biggest thr ill was w hen we went dow n to the pits, and Sammy Tanner was the hero of Asco t . We said we 're having a party in San Clemente and did he wa nt to come? He said, '~e the re girls?" T he n he said , "I'm on it!" So we went back - oh, guess who's coming to the party? Sammy Tan ner! It was like Elizabeth Taylor was showing up o r something. In your opinion, who's the best rider of a ll time? [After a long pause for thought] Boy, I gotta say Kenny [Ro bert s]! I think. all aro und, Kenny's gona be the king. I mean , I've cow-trailed with him and seen him do all his stu ff. We we re up north one t ime , going dow n a dirt' ro ad as fast as any human cou ld poss ibly go, an d I fee l something on my shoulder; I look it's Kenny and his front wheel. You know, he did a w hee lie and just sat it on my shou lder and then took it off and blazed by. You we re th e firs t t o ca pt ure h im on film ; he opened your movie. What are your thoughts on Jeff Ward ? Oh yeah, yeah, his d ad was a trials g uy, an d no w, Go d, what a career he 's had - you know, fro m mo toc ross to Ind y cars, bac k to supe rmotard. Where you'd th ink he ai n't gonna win it , a nd he 's been do ing it . He 's amazing! 5uperstock Expert event, post ing a I: I5.066 . In the B Supe rstock Expert race, a race that fe ature d o ne o f t he H o w ard/J ens e n sho wdowns , Suzuki pilot Phillip Law lis got the holeshot and led the field fo r three- fourt hs of a lap befor e giving way to an aggress ive Shanno n Ball, also o n a Suzuk i, in the fast right-hande r known as "Wago n Wheel." Ho w ard took t he le ad ; Ball re co vere d fo r se con d . Young move d past T ho m pso n fo r th ird o n the same lap . By the halfway point of the e ight-lap race . Young had latched on to Ball's tail section, w hile How ard enjoyed a relat ively so lo ru n o ut fro nt . Je nse n had moved into fourth but cou ldn't find t he speed to cut the d istance betw een himself and the battle betw ee n Young and Ball. At th e finish , it w as Ho ward w ith a tw o second margin over Ball, w it h Young in t hird and Je nsen and Law lis rounding ou t the to p five . "I drug my case cove r and almost ate it on the seco nd lap," Ball said. "I kind of gathe red it back up and tried to reel Howard back in, but I almost wa shed t he fro nt in Wagon Wheel on two laps in a row, so o nce I saw the halfway flags, I decided to just finish it ." "Ball had an o utside line at the start and got a sweet run arou nd me on the start," Howard said, "but by t he seco nd lap, I was gaining o n him pretty go od , a nd he nai led a c ur b and almo st wadde d it , and I got by him.
