And, as it wo uld turn out, Schnell chose to go out in style. It was sort of a Cinderella story; after all, before t he event, many didn't think Schnell would be able to pull off the win. At the drop of the gate for the first main on Friday night, Schnell jumped out to the 40th Anniversary lead, followed closely by Suzuki rider Davi Millsaps, who had been flyi ng throughout the day. The two riders continued to circulate the track, batt ling for t he top position , until Millsaps made a mistake and allowed Schnell to go past him. After that, Millsaps continued to fall behind, and soon the door was opened for Schne ll's younger teammate Thomas Hahn, who was competing in his first Supe rcross race , to ta ke over the second- place position . Behind Hahn, Kawasaki rider Troy Adams was working on moving up to repeat his exceptional third-place performance at last year's race. As the laps began to wind down , Schnell had begun to open up a com manding lead over Hahn in second . By the finish, Schnell was on cruise control. He crossed the line well ahead of Hahn and thirdplaced Adams . Going into the second night of racing, Schnell's confidence was at an all-time
