In sp ite of nearly zero traction, the bikes lined up. and the race was on! The M class was the first to tackle the mud, and track regular Andrew Matuse k wasted no time gettin g into the lead. Brian Woznia k traded spo ts with Matusek several times , on ly to give way and catch second place. a mere 36 seconds behind Matusek . The rest of the pack took off right on their heels, loading the trails and literally tearing up the co urse . Aher a short stint through some twisty op en -field track, riders we re already cove red w it h mud to t he poi nt o f be ing unrecogn izable. With tear-offs flying, the bikes headed int o t he w o ods , w here t he spee ds picked up and the position-changing began. The comb ination of adrenaline and hampe red vision sent several riders offthe tra il and into the trees. T his se ct io n proved to be a sho rt brea k before they headed int o an o ther e xtremely tro ublesome open-field t e st. The trails we re wide but qu ickly succumbed to the numbe r of bike s ripping up t he soft ground . O ne rider sunk his bike to midengine on the back side of a long , sweeping turn, maki ng fo r on e more obstacl e right in the middle of the trac k. With standing wate r, r utt ed-o ut trails, slippe ry hills and more , the racing remained hard and steady. There were seve ral new faces in the field for this race, o ne of wh ich was Junior rider Bradley Nuckols, w ho finished a solid fourth, giving up spots to D iamondback regu lars Tyle r Ca rt er, Tracy Bye rs and c.w. Be ll. T he Minis were give n a less slippery but wide -ope n five- lap shorter t rac k. Fro m th e drop of the gree n, 18 Mini ride rs went head to head right down to the wire . After several lead changes and a cl o se call at the finish , th e wi nner s were Yamaha pilot Dre w Dod son in t he Be ginne r cl ass , Yamaha-mounted C o le McRae in th e Juniors, and Senior Mini ace Cody Hair, on his Kawasaki.
