Gaetan claimed a trio of class wins, while Neeley was a doub le class win ner. More than tw o inches of rain fell the night be tween the Portland Trail Riders -hos ted AHRMA Vint age N at ion al on Sat urday and Sunday's Post -Vintage racing. adding to already soaked conditio ns, an d it was st ill raining as com petito rs s howed up fo r the mo rning's C ro ss Coun t ry Na tional. However, th e rain so o n stopped - th e s un eve n p e ake d out occasio nally - and the club 's sand-based track is de sig ned to handl e cond it io ns like th is . U nfortun at el y, th ere w e re quite a few noshows w ho didn't stick aro und for w hat tumed o ut to be an excellent day of racing. Hamilto n, On ta rio's Gaetan got right to it . winning t he Ulti m a 125cc Expe rt contes t unchalle nged o n a 198 3 Suzuki RM125. Two races later. he was on ano ther '8 3 Suzuki in the Ulti mat e 500cc Expert class . battling wit h Yamaha-mounted Steven Smith in both motos before taking the lead . Sm it h' s runner-u p finishes earned him second overall . In Open Age Expe rt competition. Gaetan ripped to a pair of easy wins. James Greenlea f rode to second in bo th motos , d ue ling wi th Intermed iate-c lass winner and fellow Canadian Ron Harten . who also captuned the Ultima 500cc Intermediate and Ultima 125cc Intermediate wi ns on his Hondas. He , too , was a re peat winner from Saturday's Vintage National . Inman, South Carolina's Neeley powened his 1981 Yamaha to a pair of Over 40 Expe rt moto wins. In moto two, he was battling with Robert Pisto le when the Mako ride r pulled off t he track, hurt. Pisto le had finished seco nd in t he O tho ugh Hartem handles all aspects of racing in a professional and courteous manner, he acts like a big kid. H m m m .. . H o w about Br ian " Big Kid " H a rtem ~ opening rnoro , b ut his se cond -race D N F allowed Kevin Kline (3-2) to earn second overall. Neeley also went I-I in the Gra n Prix SOOcc Expe r t contest. scrapping for a time in the opening moto with second-place finisher Smith. The Histo ric 250cc class fe atu re d some good. close racing. Dan Tow ning. riding a 19 76 Honda C R. rode to a pair of moto wins in the Intermediate division , with Chuck Be no it 's Maico crossing the line second in the opening moto, chased by Shawn O 'C o nno r and Terry Gat e s . In moto two , Gates, on his Suzuki, sha do w e d To w ning to t he checkered flag, w hile Tim Briggs earned third and O 'Conno r putt e d around to finis h fou r th . Gate s' 4 -2 placings were good enough fo r seco nd overall . over O 'C onnor (3-4), Benoit (2-5) and Briggs (5- 3). Hist oric 250cc Expe rt wi nner Mark Mitchell was part of the mix in bot h motos. In Over 50 Expert co mpetition, it ap peared Mak o -mou nt ed Ron Win get might sco re an upset victory over O hio's Jimmy Jeries, but the Honda rider patien tly w hittled away at W inget's considerable lead. O n the fourth and final lap of the lengthy track, the Maico chose the w orst possible moment to load up , allowing Jerles to pounce and race away before Winget' s engine started running cleanly aga in. Southland Racing Association Gran Prix Series Round 8: Glen Helen Raceway Pork Lopez Looks Good at SRA GP By DAVE DAIN RESULTS (Right) Canadian Oscar Gaetan powered his Suzuki RMs to three class wins at round 11 of the AHRMA Northwest Moico & CZ/Pro-Flo Post-Vintage MX Series. SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 22 nusually mild August weathe r greeted th e riders at the eighth round of the Southland Racing Association's Gran Prix Series . Hondamounted Mick Lopez took full advantage of the cooler te m pe ra tures, as he took a domi nating win in the Over 40 Amateur division. Lo pez quickly made his intentions clear by grabbing the ho les ho t . Glenn Page came off "Talladega" in second. Kenny Campbell, Rodney Morr ison and Terry Mills ro unded out the top five. Page managed t o grab t he le ad as he passed Lo pe z up "Shoe i," dropping Lopez to second. Mor rison and Campbell swapped t he third and fourth pos itions. Mills remained in fifth as the riders went out of view. Page continued to lead as the pac k w as forced to go single- file through the scorers. Gary Lowe r and Cam pbe ll's battle for fou rt h was the best on the track. The to p five remained the same for several laps, w hile Lo pez st retched his lead over the field. Lopez led the field by 25 seconds as the race passed the midpoint. The other posit ions w ere still hotly contested. Page was in second, but his margin wa s quickly evaporating as Mills was catc hing up r a pid ly. Lower an d Campbe ll rema ined locked in a battle fo r fourth and fifth, and Kris Goolsby in sixth was clos ing in on the pair, in sixth.
