Caselli began to get sick, and various little mecha nical problems caused th em to slip eve n furth er beh ind the leaders. "It just sno wballed ," Lanza said. ''A shock bolt fell out , the n we blew two shocks, lost a stator and tw ice our brakes we nt out." In th e e nd, these othe rwise small setbacks added up to valuable time tha t they could never make up. As for the Pro Circuit team that was mad e up of moto cros s sta rs Grant, Andrew Short, Tom my Hahn and Timmy Weigand, it was in co nte ntion early o n but mec hanical probl ems soon knocked th e team out . The tea m had a cooke d clutc h, not an uncommon sight for the bike the me mbers we re ridding, espec ially in an e nduran ce race . "They' re National caliber [motocross ] racers and we're just off-ro ad guys, but this is 24 hou rs, not a motocross race. The y were riding way to o fast," Davis said of his falle n competitors. By the time dusk began to near, the stra tegy of Davis' Montclair Y amaha team was beginning to payoff. All of its main competition had either fallen back or drop ped o ut due to mec hanical problems. Now the o nly team left in th e way was the Factory Honda team, which was having prob lems of its own after the first-lap altercation with Team Pro Circuit's Grant . "Halfway around the first lap, and we had a bent up subframe and a partially smashed e xhaust pipe ," Ho nda team manager Bob Bell said. They co nt inued o n like th at for eight hours whe n, at arou nd dusk , they pitt ed and changed the front wheel, front bra ke pads, rear brake pads, su bframe and airfilter. The en tire stop was lengthy, lasting seven minute s, but it was we ll worth it. Each team membe r's lap times increas ed by 30 seconds. Confident that they had eve rything unde r contro l, t he Hond a team mem be rs dec ided to take a short, and badly needed, break - but that's when they ran into tro uble. Team rider Steve Hengeveld was coming around for his supposed fo urt h lap when his te am members waved him on for o ne mo re. Howeve r, they must have been groggy as Hengeveld was actu ally already com ing in from his fifth lap, and the CRF4S0 can only go for that many laps without runn ing out of gas. So, needless to say, the bike quit , and it did so at the furt hest pos slble point from the pits. "He had to push all th e way back to the pits, which makes yo u see w hat Steve 's [Hengeveld] made of," Bell said. "We know the exact mileage of a CRF450 racing on a GP course w ith a dirty airfi lter, ' It end ed up taking Hengeveld 30 minutes to get back to th e pits, which was e nough time for Davis' Mo ntclair Yamaha team to move into the lead , prov ing once and for all that co nsistenc y indeed pays off over the course of the long 24 hou rs. r When th e chec kered nag new on the morn ing of the next day, the Winning Montclair Y amaha team of Davis, Woods, • Dudek and Fowler had completed 79 laps, about 710 miles. Th e second-placed Honda team of Johnny Cam pbe ll, Hengeveld , Tillyand Robby Bell completed 78. The KTM te am of Caselli, Lanza, Olsen and Pearson finishe d third, with 75 laps co mplet ed. In the oth er classe s, the Wi nning 125cc Expert team of Jamie Lanza, John Davies, Justin Lewis, Josh Hagy and Josh We iste ld complete d a total of 69 laps. Also, Open Expe rt winners Brian Jo hnson , Lance Haley, Shawn and Je ff O 'Leary, and Josh Y oung completed a total of 70 laps abo ard their big KTM . In the O ver 30 Expert class, th e team of Steve Phillips, Jeff Fine, Willy Surratt, Brent Bluot , Rod Fowler and Jim Domann finished with a tota l of 67 laps. In the Iron man division, Bob Robe rts co mplete d a total of 44 laps with only four hours of sleep. For him it was an exce lle nt re pea t performance of his 12hou r win a few months ago . eN Bad luck haunted the Factory KTM team all race; however, team members still pulled off a third-place finish.
