Gas is with him, because Gas on ly dresses real peo ple." 4D §ummer§ Ago Located just a stones throwaway from the original Johnson Motors of Triumph fame is the new Johnson Motors Inc., just off Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. What RinTanaka of Japan and Sean Kellyof England (both now living in the United States) have put together is a 191-page, hard -cover, superbly printed, first-class documentary of the first American ISDT team . The primary focus of the book is, of course, on McQueen, due in no small part to his star power. However, it still covers fascinating historical information of the 1964 ISDT. Included are hundreds of photographs - some never before seen in public - including photos of the equipment used by the team members and behind-the-scenes training photos from preparation training races in the California desert. The official release of the book on September 12, 2004, coincided with the 40th anniversary of the ISDT event. In honor of the release, an autograph party was given at the current Johnson Motors in Pasadena. A special event was planned for this celebration, as the surviving members of this historic team were on hand to autograph copies of the book for the hundreds in attendance. Tables inside Johnson Motors were set up for LynnWineland, motor journalist and the primary photographer in the book ; Bud Ekins, 1964 team member; Dave Ekins, 1964 team member; Cliff Coleman, 1964 team member; Ed Kretz Jr., who rode McQueen's tr iumph in 1965; and Eddie Mulder, who took over Bud's Triumph ride when Ekins rode McQueen's in 1966 at the Tijuana to La Paz race . All these men are legends in their own rights, with Mulder still active in racing, both by riding and promoting his West Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series. By 3 in the afternoon, the line outside Johnson Motors attested to the respect the motorcycle community has for these men, as a one hour wait to get your book autographed and get a glimpse of these legends was the norm . Spotted stand ing outside waiting their turns were speedway champion "Dangerous" Dubb Ferrell, speedway racer and actor Billy Gray, and actor and motorcycle-lover Perry King, just to name a few. Ifyou love motorcycles, or if you're a Steve McQueen fan, you need this book. It gives you a close-up look at what racing and riding were like for these early pioneers.
