Fritz, Barcia Top Popp in a Jiffy ~ ~ ~ iE By MATT WOZNEY PLAnEKILL, NY AUG. 15 , U nde r the threat of min from the rema ining power of Hurricane Charley, the day started a little bit soggy, but the ruts, bumps and straights formed up well as soon as the first motes started. Club president Jack Stroupe and his members did a great job with the Walden Playboys Motocross Park track, ma king fo r some very good racing. This was the 18th annual George Popp Memorial Race, held in hono r of the tra ck's founder, Georg e Popp . Joe Fritz and justin Barcia, two riders who had just returned from great finishes at the AMAAmate ur Nation al Motocross Champi onships at Loretta Lynn's, dominated their respective classes. Coming off a big second-place -overall finish in the Over 45 class at Loretta 's, Fritz put on a riding clinic at Walden . Scoring holeshots in every mota, Fritz wa s domin ant all over the trac k, prod ucing wins in both the Ove r 35 and Over 40 Expert classes. In the Over 35 class. Y amaha pilot William Sargent gave it all he had but fell short, taking second overall behind Fritz. Th ird overall went t o Honda r ider Thomas Stins on , and fourth and fifth overall went to Kawasaki jockeys Jeffrey Mitchell and Vincent Saluzz i. The O ver 40 Expert contest seemed like just anoth er day at the office for Fritz, as the Honda rider too k the overall win. Trailing in second was Y amaha-mounted Edgar Foesdish . In third overall was Kenneth Mecking, abo ard his Yamaha , and Stinson to ok fourth overall. Fifth overall we nt to Honda rider Robert Weiss. Barcia used his home-track advantage to win an astounding t hree classes at Walden. The KTM/Moroney's CycieiShift/Uquid Performan cebacked rider swept the 6Scc (10-1 I), junior Mini (7- I I) and Open Mini ( I I-I S) classes aboar d his KTM. In the 6Scc ( 10-1I) class, local District 34 favorite Dominick Guastella put in a great ride fo r second overall aboard his KTM. Kawasaki pilot Frank Robie did a great job, taking th ird overall. Fou rth overall went to KTM rider Zachary Lang, and round ing out the to p five was Tyler Loud, on his Kawasaki. In junior Mini action. Barcia flew his KTM 85 SX to the w in, and Guastella, t his ti me o n a Yamaha, once again took the second spo t. Third overall went to Matt Kawasaki's Luke Renzland, who also put in a great ride on his KX 65 for an overall w in in t he 6Scc (6-9) class. Matthew Moore, aboard his Yamaha, took fourth overall in the junior Mini class, followed by Holeshot Graphics rider AJec Eccleston in fifth overall. AMA East Coast Speedway Champion Sp eed w a y Justin Ba rcia took three overall wins at the 18th annual George Popp Memorial Race at the Walden Playboys Motocross Park near Newburgh, New York. e re my "Dark Horse" Pars on s wo n his third consecutive East Coast Scratch main event this year at Champion Speedway on August IS. In t he last -c hance qu alifier, fo rmer U.S. National Ice Ch ampion Lazor made a perfect start and rode the perfect line to snag a spot in the main ev e nt. Hard-charging Don ho lt w as second, with Harm an third and Moran fourth . On the first try at the final, an overanxio us Raffert y to uched the tapes and earned a 10ya rd penalty. W hen the tapes we nt up the second time , it was The Court jeste r-sponsor ed J Barcia's biggest win came in the Op en Mini class (for riders I I throug h IS years old), as the I l- year-old took on the elder riders and won w ith a no t he r sweep . Sephton trie d hard to catch Parsons but could not make up ground on the ve ry smooth but slick surface. Bonsignore had a great drag race with Rafferty to t he finish and won it by inches, while Lazor cou ldn't make much happen from his gate -five position. This night 's Hand icap program seemed to be for t he lower-yardage guys. Some of the big na mes went out in the se mifinals, and some names one does n't usually see in the mains had a chance to strut thei r stuff! Russ " Ho me r " Cornell, who had won his heat and semi, seemed a favorite for the final from the 30-yard line, but off the start Adam "O .j ." Mittl made a big dive to the pole, underneath Cornel l. T his move fro m Mittl enab led Donholt to move into second. Mittll ed for several laps before giving way to Donholt e and Craig Estelle. By that time, Raff rty had also moved past Mittl, though Mittl was able to stay ahead of "Flyin' Brian" Hollenbeck and Cornell.
