ABATE of California, a motorcycle rights organ izat ion , has announced the signing of Assembly Bill 2844 into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger o n August 2 3. Th e measure will modernize the outdated motorcycle handlebar he ight restrict ions contained in Ca lifornia's veh icle code section 2780 1, institu ted in 1963. Asse mbly man Jay La Suer of La Mesa, Ca lifornia, authored the bill and Denise Duc he ny brought it to the senate floor; according to ABA TE. ABA of TE Califo rnia consulted w ith the California Highway Patro l in sponsoring th e measure which w illallow a rider's handgrips to be up to , but no highe r than, six inche s above shoulder height. The bill passed by a near unanimous vote on both the Assembly and Senate floors, accord ing to ABATE. The ne w law will go into eflect on January 1,2005.
