trous and dangerous hill. "We had to rake the first breaker because it was so muddy," said Shawn Farnsworth, a club member. "We scraped off all the tops of the breakers so the little kids had a chance to get up. That's about all we can do , per the AMA officials." Farnsworth noted that many riders struggled to get a good finish Saturday, but they wouldn't be faced with nearly the same challenge on Sunday. "The riders are loving it." Farnsworth added. "They're really glad we did something with it." Farnsworth himself benefited from the nasty hill. Mer Saturday's run, he was sitting pretty in the hot seat of the Open class. He backed it up well on Sunday, carding a second overall. Only Jason Connelly topped him. Adam Doubblestein took third. Kirk Mueller, who traveled from Lavalle, Wisconsin, took home not only the 750cc title, but also fastest time of the day. He crested the hill at 7.503 seconds. It was quick, certainly, but not even close to the hill record set by 16-year-old sensation Ryan Thibault of Tiverton, Rhode Island. Last year, he posted an amazing 7.0 lOon the Canaan hill. Th ibault, easily the crowd's favorite rider, garnering cheers and hollers each time he approached the hill, didn't deliver on the hype. With the exception of a second in the 26cc-400cc Stock Wheel Base class, Thibault recorded sub par finishes. That was due in part to a banged-up leg, according to Thibault. "I smacked up my shin pretty good playing around Wednesday night, " Th ibault said. " I took a couple chunks out of it; it's pretty gross. " Thibault admitted to succumb ing to crowd pressure. During his 500cc run, the teen shot out of the hole rather quickly, but took a soil sample after the first breaker. '" got a little caught up in the moment and choked ," Thibault said. Thibault's B.521-second effort on Saturday was good enough for 23rd overall. He improved in the open class with a fifth. "Before you take off, you really gotta get your mind straight, " Thibault added. Although the four -time National Champion didn't take any titles home this year, he still has his sights set on the Pro field in 2005. "I think I'm ready," Thibault said. "Whe n I have my stuff together, I'm usually pretty good ." eN 600 4·STROKE: I. Dan Baird (7.892); 2. Lee Sartin (8.400); 3. Robert M""", (8.423). 750, I. Kirl< Muell.,. (7.503): 2.
