The O range County Fair had kept the bikes off the bullring for most of the month, and it was good to see everyone bac k. Venega s too k the go ld in the Scratch main, and Manches te r won the Hand icap side of the program . The first Sc ratch se mi ha d Bo b by "Boogaloo" Schwartz on the pole . w ith Bryan Yarrow, back from England, in lane two. On the o utside were Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell and Buck Blair. The "Master of the Gat e ," Schwartz. d idn't disappoi nt . read ing the starter beauti fully and never looki ng back . McConnell followed him home, and they were headed (o r the main. Yarro w and Blair would get one more shot in the last-chance qualifier. T he se co nd se mi had Mancheste r o n t he po le . w it h " Fast Ed" Castro in two. On th e o utside were Scott "T he Do minato r" Brant and Venegas. Manche ster went o ut on top , w it h Venegas on his tail. The first try at a go www.cyclenews.com saw Brant get into the tapes, and he w as sent to the 20-yard line . They loaded in again: this time Yarr ow w o n, and he would advance t o the main. Brant finished secon d. They ro lle d to line fo r the Scratch main. McCon nell got the pole , w ith Venegas in two, Schwartz in three , and Yarrow and Manchester on the outside. Manches ter's mechanic pushed his bike to the pits. Manchester was nowh e re to be seen - unt il he ca me o ut of the p it s aboard his bike , w earing see-t hro ugh plas tic leathers made for him by NJK. O therwise. he wore only his jockey briefs and a sm ile. To the cheers of the fans, they lined up for the richest race of the night. When the tapes came up , Venegas explod ed off t he line . H e r uns t he high lin e . and McCo nne ll d ropped dow n to the pole. w he re he does his bes t work. The two due led fo r four laps. but Venegas was not to be den ied, and the victory was his. McCon ne ll was second, with Schwartz, Yarrow and Manchester rounding o ut the field. T he H and ica p main had D ar io Ga lvin, Geo rge Fox and J.T.
