SOBER AUBURN,CA, AUG. 13 L ongtime speedway veteran Tom my Hed den led the freight train that was the Handicap main to his first Fast Fridays win of the season. " I knew if I gave t he m any ro om at all inside , th ey 'd get past me, but it worked out well, and man, it's about time I won one of these." Th e midra ce re st art w as cau se d by ea rly leader Matt Bro wn e , who slowed and slightly overslid in turn four, leaving Bilty Hiles now here to go but into the path of Bobby Hed den, Faria a nd Bran t. Ine xpli ca bly, Browne, w ho also managed to cut off Bobby's outside-line chances later in th e race , resta rte d at t he fro nt of the line, while Hiles was re legated to the back of the pack. Brant he ld on to second, third wen t to Faria, fourth to Bobby and fifth to Hiles . Far ia fare d better in th e Sc ratch m ain, drawing lane two and going w ire to w ire to win his second such eve nt of the seaso n. "Hey. not too bad for an o ld man , huh?" Faria grinned after the event. Brant had the ne xt-fastest stan but stayed o ut side . looki ng to go ar o und t he smo ot h- gating Faria - a move that cost him dearly when he was passed by Bobby and Bart Bast o n the blue groo ve. Tommy won the fifth and final tra nsfer spot in the Challenge Eliminatio n Championship and would be join ing Faria. Bobby, Bartek Bardec ki and Brant in the winner-la ke-all Challenge final on August 27 . Fast Fridays promote r David Joiner spe nt most of the even ing ru nning from one end of the trac k to the other. Joiner, who picked Friday night 's even t as his one week per seaso n to ride in the Divi ion Three program , fou nd out whe n s he got t o the t ra c k t ha t his an nou ncer a nd track-prep arat ion supe rviso rs we re bo t h no shows for the night - so allJoiner had to do that evening, aside from riding in the third division, was man the micro phone (or eac h race , ru n the tr actor on a ll the schedu led track drags, and dr ive the tro phy girls onto the infield prior to the Division O ne main eve nts. Manhire slipped by as well, re legating Cane pa to third. T he only th ing left was the Dash Fo r Cash . By that time, it appeared that Foste r had his foe figur ed o ut. He won the cash and the bragging rights for the evening. The final results didn't reflect how close all of t he racing between the front-runne rs realty was . Thou gh Fost e r seemed to have Canepa's numbe r for the night, the se ries was just getti ng started, and the dynamic duo would have plenty of opport unit ies to con tinue t he ir rivalry at fut ure rounds . The seco nd round of the se ries came to the loamy confines of the Hanford Fairgrounds. where a long, fast TT layout awa ited . The race rs came out in d roves , showing their appreciation for t he o pportunity to race so freque nt ly. De sp ite t he sweltering he at , there was an elemen t of fresh excitement in the air. That emotion was increased e xpo nentia lly when the top divisions took to the track. The 2S0cc Expert hea t race proved to be a sign of th ings to come. The momen t the gree n flag w ave d , Chris C a nepa an d C had Fos te r sta rted a night of incred ible racing. Canep a got a grea t sta rt on his C RF450R, but Foste r was close behind on his Y amaha. Nter seve ral laps of intense . fe nde r-t o -fende r act ion , C anepa won the heat by less than a bikele ngt h. Th ere w ere , o f course , o ther r ide rs invotved. but Can epa and Foster locked horns again in the Modern Open Expert heat race. O nce again, they we nt at each o ther for the ent ire ra c e. C a ne pa wa s pro ving t o be a ho leshot art ist, but th is time , Foster got him right at th e en d, tying them at one heat -race win apiece. If the heat rac es were fun to wat ch, th e main eve nts we re almost indescribable. Cane pa con tinued his fast-starting way s in the 250 cc Expert main, but Foste r was all ove r him right away. The lead was exchanged more than once , and each ride r exhibited a differe nt style: Foste r o pted to carry momentum by keeping his lines smooth, while Cane pa wo uld dive into corn ers a nd almo st square t he m up . MX-style. In the e nd , Fo st e r 's sm o o th ness pa id o ff and he nipped the Honda rider for the first win of the ir two main-eve nt mee tings.
