speed by his teammate van den Bosch in a pretty unfortunate maneuver - then Delep ine might have had a toug her time of it. Befo re his crash , Lazzarini had co llecte d a solid pole (the second in a row) , almost a half-second faster than the rest of the pack. Then, he easily won moto one after putting pressure on early leader Seel and pressuring the champion into a mistake . Lazzarini appeared set to grab the provisional championship lead by the end of the day, but right after getting the holeshot in moto two, he was put down the hard way by the former World Champ from France, who came into the corner too fast. The result of that collision was a double fracture to Lazzarini's left foot. It put him out of the German round , but he is not expected to miss the next round in about a mo nth "I don't know what to say," Lazzarini said. "I felt that that was my day; I felt really strong and I could dom inate the GP. I don't believe VDB did it intent ionally but , that doesn 't change the fact that that cost me lots of points and that I have to recover from a broken foot now. It' s pretty disappointing." Hiemer kept himself in second place for most of the Super Final - except for the few laps he was passed by De lepine and the German brilliantly completed his home GP by finishing second. Third was Max Manzo on the 550cc Aprilia tw in, which mar ked the first podium finish in the SI class for the manufacture r. While the mach ine finally showed some major improvement, Manzo still had some trouble in moto one w he n he finished seventh du e to e xhaust-pipe proble ms. In the second moto, he was doing well before losing con trol in the overwate red off-road section , where he lost control and lost many positions, finishing seventh again. But he got it turned around in the Super Final. "I'm very happy because I d idn't expect such a good result ," Manzo said. 'J\fter the dark of the first rounds, we improved a lot, and I'm very happy for this resu lt. We have still a lot of work to do , though ," It wasn't an ideal weekend for van den Bosch, who was looking for his third win of the season in Germany. He jumped back o n the LC4, but he wasn't as successful. In moto one Lazzarini was just too fast, and van den Bosch finished second . In the second moto, van den Bosch was involved in the accide nt with Lazzarini and finished 15th. In the main event, he too k the lead for much of the race, but at the end he had to give it up in the long and dema nding race. It turned out to be a reasonably good week end for Chambon, who didn't look like he was on the pace of some of his contenders. With a second and a first in the two motos and a mediocre seventh in the Super Final, however, he still leads the SI standings. Seel was happy with the improve- ments to his bike, but he had some bad luck in Ge rmany. He went down in mot o one w hile leading, and it took a long time for him to rejoin the batt le. In the second moto, he was fourt h - a result he repeated in the Super Final. It was a good race for Valter Bartolini and his Vor, the 600cc single-cylinder machine racing among the much larger 690cc single-powered factory units of the competition. Bartolini started from the first row in the Super Final and eventually finished in sixth place. 52 Two-time World Motocross Champion Frede ric Bolley was finally in the ideal position to show his value after three DNFs in the prev ious three GPs. A massive amount of wo rk on the fragile Apr ilia paid o ff, and Bolley basically dominated in Germany. Baileywas quick right from the start of the timed practices , where he got a solid pole, and also in moto one, where he started behind his teammate Jerome Giraudo, and the n passed him right away w hen they both first e nte red the off-road section . Giraudo , however, did regain the lead and take the moto win. Moto two was much the same in the early go ing, with Giraudo in front before getting passed by Bolley in the dirt. But this time the attack appeared to be a bit dicey, and Bolley decid ed to back off and let Giraudo back in the lead . Giraudo tried to pull away, but Bolley kept close, and in the off-ro ad section , where Bolley wa s visibily faster, he passed Giraudo more cleanly th is time before go ing on to win. The Super Final was basically a lonely one for Bolley who ran w ell in front of , his pur suers for the entire distance . Behind him on the pod ium were KTM 's Fabrice Lecoanet and Husvarna's Davide Gozzini, who finished second and th ird, res pectively. "I was feeling very goo d with the bike and the track here in Germany," Bolley said. "O n the asphalt I was as fast as the others, but on the dirt I was a good second faste r than anyone else . We worked a lot after Sosnova, and I worked a lot on my me ntal cond itioning. I have to be hon est and say our tw in bike gave us a lot of advantage on such a fast circu it, and I was glad to take advantage of it. Now I ho pe the oth ers will go through som e problems, because my goal is to go for the high prize this year." As the other champ ionships are in their final stages , World Supermoto w ill soon benefit from the presence of some top-calib er riders such as Stefan Everts, w ho w ill enter the Bilstain round in Belgium in October, and Max Biaggi, who will participate at the Latina's stop in November. eN SACHSENRING CIR CUIT SACHSENRING, G ERMANY R ESULTS: SE PTEMBER 4-5, Pignott i (Yor); 17.
