These last few weekends I've been getting good starts and it's all because of him. I don't know, I just like this track, I've alwa ys ridden pretty well here; t hey do a good jo b here, t here are mu ltip le lines, be rms that are berms . He went out on the t hird lap. In t he seco nd moto, W ind ham comple ted the first lap in 10th but gra du ally worked h is way up to fou rt h, passing Kyle Lewis on the se cond to last lap. 12 DavidVuillemin 14th (6-DNF) Team Yamaha's David Vuillemindidn't live up to his potential at Glen Helen, though he did hold down third for a long time in the first moto before dropping back to sixth. In the second moto, Vuillemin sta rted off in sixth but went backward s again and pulled off on the sixth lap while running 10th. "The bike didn't break," Jason Haines, Vuillemin's mechanic, said somewhat jokingly. "He had severe arm pump ." 26 Michael Byrne 108 Joaquim Rodrigues 12th (15-10) Joaq uim Rod rigues rode well at Glen Hele n, although he didn't get the results to show it. "I 've been sick all we e k with a stomach ache and all that," Rod rigues said. "The first moto, off the start, I really messed up - I spu n on the concrete and was dead last. I was going w ide open on the s first lap and was going wide open down the hill . Then Fonseca kind of cut inside and I hit him and had a big crash. I got up and crashed again, so the first rnoto was a mess . The second moto, I had a pretty good start, and I was right there with those guys. I had a good battle w ith Windham; we passed back and forth three or four times . Then Igot my stomach again - man, Ithought I was going to crap in my pants! ':All man, you know, these first motos of this year have really bee n holding me back in the ove ralls," Wey said. "Today I reallywanted to get some thing going, but in the first moto I was really trying hard and trying to make some quick passes, which is what you need to do ifyou do n't get a good start. Unfortu nately Itried squaring up Rodrigues and clipped his back wheel , and went down." Wey crashed again later that same mo to . In the second moto, "Ididn't get the start I needed," Wey said. It was his first Na tional MX in 14 years and squeaked into the 40 rider fie ld th rough Sunday morning's LCQ . "It was good," Davis said. 'Tm a little w hooped, but I had a lot of fun. I was really intimated in th e qualifiers; I had been riding the 4S0 until th is week - I've been rid ing the 2S0 for the WORCS stuff - I was tight and nervous, t hen I got 20th in my qualifier. I'm like, 'This ain't fo r me.' And th e n the Last Chance I holeshotted and led for a cou ple of laps, and that built my confide nce up. In th e mains, it was a totally diff eren t race. The pace is different, guys are just crashing the mse lves out , I was totally shocked. I'm like passing guys that blew by me in the qualifie rs, but in the motos they just ... you know, I pass 'e m. It's kind of funny because I'm the last guy to get in [to the main] an d the n Iget 24th and 20th . I mean , how does that happen?" 27 NickWey Vuillemin reported ly st ruggled with arm pump as 16th (9-DNF) Going into the final ro und of the year, Kawasaki's Michael Byrne held fifth place in the series points stand ings, 10 points ahead ofTeam Honda's Emesto Fonseca. In the first moto, Byrne saw his lead shrink to just six points after finishing ninth, while Fonseca finished seventh. In the second moto, Byrne got off to a 17th-place start, while Fonseca started off in fourth . Byrne was trying to work his way up when he burned out his back brake, most likely by pushing extra hard on the track 's long downhills. Byrne pulled off on the ninth lap and lost his fifth place position in the standings to Fonseca, who ended up fifth overall on the day with a pair of seventh-place finishes. (Ha n); 3 1.
