AUG. 11 T he heavy rains that have plagued Maryland almost every Wednesday for the last mont h and a half dumped a huge amount of water in about an hour on August I I. This would end an event at almost any other track, but whe n the skies cleared about 5 o'clock, the me mbe rs of the Baltimore County Trail Riders kicked into high gear, squeegeeing the excess water off the track . They got the sand/clay surface into racing shape by the 7 o' clock start ing time (and practice was dropped). For t he second st raight eve nt , Brando n Ro b inson took th ree fe atu re wins o n his Robinson's Ele ctr ic/ Mo m & Dad-sponso red machines. As th e Scott USA Mo to cross Ch am pionsh ip Se r ies nears its e nd, the action continues to increase, with almost all racers performing at their peak. In t he fir st 12Scc Expe r t mo to , Re ed powe red his way to the first t um first and led the pack by quite a distance for the first three laps. T hen , wh ile w o rking his w ay t hro ugh a sec tion of fou r high-ban ked rightJleftJrightJleft turns, Reed stalled the four-stroke Honda and gave the lead to Shane Horne, who was ready and waiting: Home too k over and con tinued on to take t he first- moto win. Reed was able to restart in time to stay in front of Steve n Yarosz and Thomas Koraleski, who were having their own ra ce for t hir d ; t he two Yamaha race rs changed positions severa l times before Yarosz finally reached the checkered flag just barely in front of Koraleski. In the second mote, Reed blasted his way arou nd the sandy, loamy track , appearing to go faster w hile adapting to the changing track. Although the sandy trac k gets berms and ruts as races progress, t he clay-pac ked faces of the jumps ho ld up, sending the faste r guys into o rbit. Reed races with a low -to-t he- gro und s tyle, keep ing his bike on the grou nd and accelerating instead of spending time in the air. Horne worked his way into contention for the lead, but Reed shut the door on him at every op portunity. In the end, Reed took the moto w in and the overall, while Horn e added a seco nd to his first for seco nd ove rall. K Miller and Mark Burns swapped mot o yle w ins in th e 2S0cc Four-Stroke Inte rmed iate class , with Miller taking th e overall. Burn s piloted his Suzuki with expertise in the first mote, keeping Miller at bay throughout . Miller came on strong in t he second mot o and was unstoppable w hile leading the race . While jo hn H. Black consisten t ly nailed down two fourth place finishes for fou rth overall, Ray Fletc her and Tim King split third - and fifth-place finishes. Mista kes, mishaps and missed opportunities kept the third throu gh fifth places in a constant state of change: No sooner did Fletcher move into third t han Black w o uld pa ss him ; Black wou ld be doing great until he w o uld bobble and give his spot to King then King would appear to ; have things under control when all of a sudden Fletcher would be back in third. This class is a perfect e xamp le o f the excellen t actio n the prog re ssive class struct ure breeds . T he five race rs of near-equal ability put on a fantas tic display of hard-core amate ur mot ocross racing, w it h each of the com petitors giving it thei r all for a shot at victory.
