over the wall on the first lap were the Ie Riche brothers - Brent also with a two, and Bruce with a three. On the second lap, Florin came back with a spectacu lar clean at the wall. Spaniard David Chaves also took a clean , wh ile every other ride fived the section . O n lap three, the wheels appeared to be com ing off fo r Florin, as he logged two fives in a row on the third and fourth sec tions, and then added another in the relative ly easy section 12. However, the Floridian cruised home with a 13-po int margin for the win, wh ile Aaron nippe d Brent Ie Riche by a single mark for second. "It's about time," said Florin, who has been close to winning his first National before but has neve r managed to seal the deal. "It took me a while to look at all the sco res and make sure I really did it." "I haven't re ally had good luck riding the New England Nationals, so it rea lly doesn't surprise me that much ," lamented Aaron . "Chris had a real good ride , so hats off to him." Webb was the talk of Sunday's event, running out front, oblivious to the mind games going on behind him and setting the standa rd in almost every section he e nco untere d on the first lap. Afte r two laps of the IS-section course, Webb continued to lead with a total of 35 po ints. Aaron was two po ints back with 27, while thr ee other riders Chaves, Florin and Bell - were still in the mix with 39 points each. Aaro n's last lap, howe ver, made the difference. "W he n I did make mistakes on the last lap, I was able to hang on for cleans or ones," said Aaron . "Those cou ld have eas ily turned into twos or threes. I still made some mistakes , but I was trying real hard on the last lap, because I knew that it was going to come down to the w ire." Aaron's 14-pointfinal lap clinchedthe win, while Webb blew up, dropping 25 marks . "I misse d a mar ker and broke a ribbon, but I think you're hearing the same story from everybody," added Aaron . '" think [the organizer s] did a good job, but it was easy to make mistakes like that and ge t tangled up in the markers and st uff. I did a good job of trying to keep my scores to a minimum, but it was a real close one." Bell claimed the second-place spot with 55 points, com pared to Aaron's 51. Webb was th ird wit h 60, while Florin and Bruce Ie Riche were fourt h and fifth with 62 and 63. eN ( 17): 3. Lewis Bolopue (IB ): 4. Vaughn Cady (49); 5. William Altman (8 1). HI SCH L: I.
