Itho ugh the "nonsertes" nature of the final /""'\i:::.ars City night race of the season was supposed to make for a mell w event, there was no o trace of leisure in the Pro ranks, as local heroes Nathan Tiearney and jimmy Nelso n battled to split wins in the l25cc and 250cc Pro classes. The first I25cc moto burst off the line with Nelson ou t fro nt , bu t Tiea rney, fresh orr an appearance in the 12Scc final at the Washougal National, po unced imme diately to take the lead on the first lap. From the re, Nelson shado wed Tiearney on the compact Carson layout as both rid e rs dist anced the mse lves fro m the pac k. Nelson hung it out, try ing to regain the lead, but Tiearn ey rode flawlessly to take the victory. The seco nd mota began with Tommy jean out fro nt , follo wed cl osely by a surprise conte nde r, Inte rme diate rider j.L. Bitz, who cho se to leave his first -mota Inte rmedia te victory on the table as he left with the Pros on th e first ga te . T iear ney a nd Ne lson fo ught 62 frantically from just behind, each realizing the advanta ge that awa ited the one who rea ched the lead first. After figh ting past Bin and Jean, Tiearney grabbed the lead early in the race , and Nelson followed closely beh ind. Howeve r, just as in the first mota. Tieamey refused to break unde r the pressu re , and he took the win just ahead of Nelson. In t he 250cc class, Nelson held the advan tage ab oard his po tent VZ4 50F, wh ile T ie a rne y adj ust e d to a borrowed YZ2 50 . Nelson claimed the win in bo th motes. w hile n earn ey fought back fro m a first-mot e fall to grab seco nd overall. ahead of Jean in th ird. Bitz added a Schoolboy win to his unofficial Pro -class deb ut, putting in tw o convincing mo ta wins, ahead of Ryan Ferris in second and Bea u Meier in third . Ferris also piloted his CR250 to the 250cc Inte rmed iate w in. ahead of Nate Vandermade in secon d and Eric Pearson in t hird. Although this race mark ed the final night event at the facility for the season, the re should be ple nty more action at Cars on in the near futur e . Sco tt USA Mo tocro ss Champi o ns hip Series Round 3 I: Delta Raceway Reed Pilots 7 47 to Delta V ictory By ARTHUR MABRY DELTA, OH, AUG. 7 D avid Reed rode his num ber-747 Honda CRF2S0R to victory at the Saturd ay night racing event in Delta . Oh io . Challenged by Jake "The Snake" Davis and defending Expe rt champion David Merr ill, Reed raced at a bliste ring pac e to place first in t he firs t 250cc Expe rt mota and second in the seco nd mota to take the ove rall. Davis too k the holesho t and led th e first mota for the first thr ee laps but spun out in the "Supe r " bowl, giving the lead away to Reed , who was right the re , ready to take over, By the time Davis recove red. Reed was too far ahead for Davis to regain the lead. Me rrill, reco ve ring from yet another injury, got in the mix and was able to throw a wre nch in the wo rks by taking second in the first mota. In the second mota , Davis again to o k the ho leshot and th is t ime led t he entire mo ta, racing with finesse and style ar ou nd the funfilled trac k. Reed 's low -t o- t he -ground style 40th Anniversary served him well, and he put on a nearly pe rfect pe rfo rma nce . C le ve r line selec t io n, natural physica l ability and his sharp se nse of o th e r race rs' moves all added up to t he ove rall for Reed and a great show for thos e in the packed stands. The fantastic Delta t rack has the start and finish right in fron t of t he bleache rs , and then the track stretches out on both ends for excellent specta tor viewing. In 250cc Inte rmediat e act ion, old guy Jim Bronson swap ped wins with Paul Laing for the win, At 29 years old , Bronson is t he olde st, wisest and fastest of them all. In the first mota, Lainggot off to a great start , and though he was challenged several times, he was able to fend off all who tr ied him. Bronson held steady. waiting for an opportu nity to pass, but it never came. The second mota saw a change of luck for Bronson, who started in the front of the pack and made his getaway while Laing got caught in traffic. Laing eventu'alty caught up to Bro nso n, and they had a terrific race to the finish, w ith o nly a couple of bikelengths between the m at the finish-line double.
