He wasted no time cha rging to the front of the O pen Superstock Expert final on his Michelin Yamaha R I. Larry Pegram moved to second, as teammates Mark Junge and Tray Batey battled for th ird . Jensen had the ha mmer down . setting a ne w track rec o rd of I: 14:40 I on the fourt h lap. Then it was clear sailing to the checkered flag. In the 600cc Superstock No vice final, Scott Collins charged through the field to run do wn early leader Brandon Parrish . Ch r is Lake bested HM R's Dary l Noit for third , As the 60 0cc Superstock Expert final lined up . the rain came. After a short delay, the riders lined up for the start, Bradley Champion and Junge blasted into the first comer and carefully t ipped it in , By t he th ird lap , Timothy Bemisderfer had the lead, and he began to run away. Co ming from midpack. Kawasaki-mounted Chris Nonnand began to run down Bemisderfer, coming within a few bikelengths before he lost it in t he Carouse l. No it took third on his 600cc Honda. In the 7 50cc Super bike Nov ice ra ce , Go rdo n wo n, over Coleman. In the 600cc Superbike Novice final, Tom Hughey be at Colli ns. David Yaakov took his CAD Cy cles/Suzuki 650 to victo ry in the Form ula Two Expe rt and lightweight Twins finals. Brian Stokes was right t here to challe nge Batey in the 750cc Superstock Expert final. Trading the lead 20 time s in this 10-lap race, th is twosome put on a great show for t he hund re ds of spectators. Je nse n was th ird but moving up steadily and , coming o ut of the last co rner, he split the lead pa ir and gained second, Batey won, w ith Stok es third . Bat ey and Stokes w e nt at it again in t he Formu la One Expert final. Side by side t hey raced , trading the lead . Stokes took the lead out of turn five; Bate y snatched it back in tum one. Jim Clark was turning heads as his strangesounding, RS-based Triumph 955 blasted do wn the front straight away, ru nning ninth. Je nse n broke away fro m his battle wi th David Weber but co uld n't mount a challenge to the leaders. Coming around for the final flag, Stokes went off the track, handing Batey the victory. AMP Top Gun Summercross Series Round 3: L05 Banos f airgrounds McDaniel ~::&:Jif'jMl LOS BANOS, CA, JULY 24 Cory McDaniel won the main event at the third round of the AMP Top Gun Summercross Series in Los Banos, California. 38 SEPTEMBER8, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS A t rou nd th ree of the AMP Top Gu n Sum /"'\mercross Se ries, the re was a new face earning the win in the night's premier event, as DH Cycles o f Modesto rider Cory McDan iel claimed victory in the Top Gun Sho otou t. Eric McCrummen, th e d o m inant winner of th e fir st two rounds , was out of tow n, and McD aniel se ized the op portunity and tu rned up the Wick, making a flawless IS-lap run through the field. Veteran Hond a pilot Jeff Pesta na d id his best to disrupt McDanie l's charge but had to settle for the ru nne r-up spot, while David Gassin, Den nis Stap leto n and Bea u Wiegan d rounded o ut the top five . McDaniel and Pestana shared the glory in th e Pro races , as McDanie l put together a solid I- I effo rt in the 12Scc Pro class . A pair o f ho leshots 40th An n iversary fo r the Suzuki rider did the trick, and Pesta na (2. 3), Ro bert Harold (4- 2), Gassin (3-S) and Steven Hern andez (5-4) roun ded out the top five. Pestana had a better outing in th e 250cc Pro class , as he swapped moto wi ns w ith McDaniel, taking the all-impo rt ant second-mota win fo r t h e o v e r all on t h e nigh t w ith a 2- 1 tally. Mc Da nie l, who houn de d Pe stan a th e en ti re se con d mo ta, just co uld n't find a line aroun d him an d po sted a 1-2 score for th e two spot, w hile Stap leton (4- 3) , Har old (6-4) and Tyson Enzweiler (5-5) rounded out the top five. In the Mini ranks, Prest on Mull aced bo th of h is mot o s t o t ake t he w in in th e 80cc Interm ediate class, bes ting Ruben Hernan dez (32) and Marcus Bradshaw (2-4) on the night. Mota scores were allove r the place in the SOcc Novice con test, and in the end, Michael Parks posted a 3I score for the w in, ove r Briar McCorkle ( 1-4) and Jeff Mann Jr. (5-2). A 20-ride r field of BOcc Beginners saw Tyler Brow n come ou t o n to p with a co nsisten t 2-2 score, while be Ho pkins backed up a first-mota win with a third for second overall on the night, followed by Alec Selby (4- 1), who rounded ou t the top three.
