while Chaves dropped three single dabs
in three differ ent sections. This , of
course , meant th at Chaves had one less
clean than the oth er two riders, someth ing th at would come back to haunt him
in the end .
O n Sunday, Aaro n, Chaves , five-time
Ute Cup cham pion Mark Manniko and
Colo rado's Keith Wineland all cleaned the
morning loop, w hile Wieland dropped off
the pace afte r taking a three in section 10.
O n the afternoon loop, Aaron dropped
a point in the first sec tion , Manniko
dro pped one in section three, Chaves took
a dab in section eight and Wineland needed a prod in section 10. Each of the four
riders finished the final loop clean, leaving
them tied for Sunday's win. The best ride
of the day-award was given to Wineland by
the "fart hest clean" rule, since he went farthest before taking his dab.
For the overall. Aaron and Chaves we re
dead even, but the difference in cleans gave
the overall to Aaron. Aaron was delighted
to take home the beautiful Ute Indianinspired trophy for the overall win, and his
name was added to the traveling cup.
"The whole event was super close and
pretty pressure-packed ," Aaron said .
" Luckily for me, I had eno ugh cleans to
take the overall win. This event is a gre at
way to get o ut in the mountains of
Colorado , ride a longer-t han- normal loo p
and see some grea t scen e ry. The sec tions
are obvio usly not as hard as a Nat ional,
which makes it difficult for th e top riders
because the sections are all cleanable . so
it just boils down to a me ntal game and
concentration. but it is a prestigious and
fun event to ride."
"I saw Geoff take a point on the second
lap and I was ve ry pumped. because it put
me in the lead," said Chaves about his ride
on Sunday. "But, it is very difficult to go
clean the whol e day, and I had a little mistake when my rear wheel was spinning
and I had to take a po int. Then I cleaned
everything else and we tied on po ints. but
his extra clean was the difference ."
jake Wie land finishe d th ird ove rall,
