After over two hours of racing, Kanney took the checkered flag with just six seconds to spare over Summers. Kanney from Highfalls, New York, said, , "For the whole last lap I knew Scott was there. When he stopped for gas [on the last lap], I just tried to put as much time on him as I possibly could. He was faster in the woods but I had the advantage on the motocross tracks, so I rode as hard as Icould, trying to put as much time on him as I could." "We probably made a mistake estimating my fuel usage," Summers said. "We we re set up to go two hours [or five laps] without stopping . At that point, I was right on Kanney's tail. and the unschedu led pit sto p gave Kanney a big advantage ." After the race, Kanney said from the podium, "I don't know if I was the fastest guy here today or not , I just ended up in the right place at the right time ." The race featured multiple leaders that also included KTM's Shane Watts , Yamaha rider Jimmy Jarrett and Kawasaki-mo unte d Cole Calkins. Lazzarini followed in second place, and KTM's Boris Chambon was third afte r overcoming a less-than -perfect start. SEPTEMBER 1, 2004 • CYCLE N EWS 40th Anniversary The Nevada Rally Experience Scot Harden and Casey Folks have announced they will be hosting the Nevada Rally Experience - a two day, no n-compe titive GPS and Roadboo k style Rally, Oc tober 22 th ro ugh 24. "We've design ed the Nevad a Rally Expe rience to be as close to compet ing in an actual 'marathon' raid rallyevent as you'll find anywhere this side of Dakar," Hard en said in a press release. The NRE retraces the ro ute of the only marat hon raid rally eve nt ever he ld in the United States · the Nevada Rally (the Ne vada Rally was prom ote d by Acerbis and Best in the Desert from 1993 to 1995). The NRE selects a diflerent stage each year from the old Nevada Rally as its theme. Entrants willbe provided a road book and GPS route to navigate the stage. It is not a timed event . It is not a race . It is a highly organized and well laid out navigation and riding experience limited to a small group of SO rally enthusiasts, according to Harden and Folks. For its fi rst year, the NRE re visits Stage One of the 1993 Nevada Rallyfrom Mesquite to Pioche , Nevada . It's a looped event with a return to Mesquite at the end of day two . The length of the course each day will be roughly 150 miles. The Rally w ill bivouac in Pioche . Entrants have the option of "moteling" it in town or camping under the stars in the desert in an authentic bivouac setting. Like a true rally, the course has bee n designed to accom moda te 700cc and up dual sports like the KTM 950 Adventu re and the BMW GS. Folks has ove r 40 years of expe rience pro moting off-road events through his organ ization, Best in the Desert - including the Incas Rally ( 1987) and the Nevada Rally (1993 to 1995). More recently, Folks promoted the new millennium ultra marathon off-road event, the Nevada 2000, the longest off-road race ever held in the United States. Harden , meanwhile, has won nearly every major off-road event held in North Amer ica. including three Baja 1000 overalls, and is one of only a small handful of Americans to ever achieve success on the world rally scene . With podium finishes in events like the Incas and Atlas Rally and an overall win in the 1987 Djer ba Rally, no American has more rally exp erience than Harde n. More recently, Harden grabbed the attention of many U.S. off-road fans with his performance in the 2004 Dakar Rally. Through his company, Harden-Offroad, Harden conducts adventure camps and off-road riding schools where he trains everyone from beginners to the most experie nced riders in the art and scienc e of on- and off-road adventure riding. "W ith the increased awareness and inter est in rally-style events , we wanted to let American s see what it is all abo ut," Harden said. "This event is very authentic and will be used as a training run for the 2005 Red Bull KTM U.S. Dakar squad . The course is awesome. The challenge will be to navigate the route using roadbook and waypoints from the start to finish." For more information on the NRE. visit www.harden-offroad.comorcalI9511704-6370.
