Tortelli turned up for a little extra training in his co me back e ffort . O n th e day, Tortelli topped the Ope n Pro conte st w it h a perfect 1· 1 showing, though no t wi thout some se rio us batt ling with Suzuki/Shift pilot Kyle Partridge. In mo to on e , Part ridge blasted out front with the holeshot and se t a blistering pace . At the time , Partridge was the only rider jumping a hu ge 100-fo o t - p lus gap t ha t c o m bi ne d a table top with a down hill ste p-down jum p, and th is gave him all t he ad vantage he ne eded to maintain the lead e arly o n. Torte lli worked up int o second place by lap thre e and followed Partridge clo se ly fo r a few laps . Finally, just befo re halfway, To rtelli followed Part ridge right over the giant co mbo jump and soon to ok over t he le a d . Fr om t he re, Torte lli w e n t unchallenged to the chec kere d flag for the win. Partr idge was second, with Turbo Reif in t hird . As the sun fell in. the western sky, the starting gate fell to get the first race going. Lead ing the cha rge in 12Scc Inte rm ed iate ac t io n, Chase Pierce o f McRa e , Ark ans as , snat che d the hol eshot from locals Jo na th an Ch e ek, Mall Reyno lds an d Just in Th urman. Getting shoved arou nd o n the sho rt sta rt was KTM rider Jo hnny Moore from Mississippi. Pie rce' s lead was sho r t - Hve d. ho weve r, as Th ur man made like a bandit for th e le ad and pr omptly Look o ver. Just as quic kly, Chee k fo llo we d su it o n his YZ250F. Tra iling close behind was Moore . o n his o range sc reamer. Once out front , though , it was all Thu rman , as he gapped the field and crossed the line ahead o f a m o tiv a t e d Moore . C he e k, Pierce a nd Reynolds rou nded out the to p five. In mo to two , Thurman storm ed orr the line and struck like lightning as Cheek, Moore and Reynolds gave chase. With Moore start ing to pou r it o n, Chee k in tum began push ing as we ll. The duo's battle gave leader T hurman just w hat he needed to continu e his ma rc h for ward . When the chec kers new, it was again Thurman w ho claimed the victory. Moo re again finished se cond, ahe ad of Chee k, Reynolds and Yamaha J S2 pilot Patrick Java. Th e buzz around the track was co ncerning the first Supermini mot o. Uning the gate we re a numb er o r yo ung guns, includi ng Le vi Best, Briar Sample , Andy Ruppert , Aaron Harrell and Justin Carr . Whe n the gate fell, it was Kawasakimo unted Kasey Fisher hanging it o ut all the way to the first corner, ahea d of KTM riders Best and Clay Mor gan . That last ed a sho rt ti me, though , as Best made his move , followe d by Morgan. Another KTM rider, Harrell , bega n making his move and sudde nly round himself in t hird . At mota's e nd , it was Best, Morgan, Harrell and Ruppert. Moto two got go ing with Harrell and Best pointing their KTMs to the front , w hile a th ird one , ridde n by Mo rgan , slithe red in be hind them . Ha r rell ha d the tra ck d ialed , a nd it showed, as he led Be st lap aft e r lap. Fishe r pinned his Kawasaki in hopes or making up for a less -than-s tellar first mot o and began pre ssur ing Mo rgan . Wit h t he he ight en ed pace and the short laps , the checkers fle w q uick ly. and Harrell had the moto win. Best crossed the line in second, but his co nsistent finishes and speed gave him the overall. In o ther racing action, Co lt Nicho ls won five of six motos to take w ins in th e 65cc (9- 1I), 6Scc Open and 85cc Junior classes . Also racing hard an d loo king good was Woody Ha rvin , aboa rd his big KTM four-stro ke . Harvin took the win in the Over 40 class with 3- 1 finishes. Pleasure Riders Hillclimb Gocken Triples His Pleasure BY BUD NORTHRUP CAYUGA, IN, JULY 10 I t was a wet and muddy weekend at the Pleasure Riders c1ubground s, but 127 riders were there to ride the ISS-foo t hill, despite th e co nditions. Fifteen-y ear-old John Michae l Goeken was the mo st successful mudde r, as he claimed wins in all th ree classes he e nte red . Goeken's first win came in the 4S0cc class, in which he posted a 4.918 -seco nd time on his first rid e on his CRF450R Honda , w hich was just good eno ugh to edge Paul Hill rd , w ho blasted a his Y amaha 3SOcctwin over in 4.947 secon ds. Riding the Hond a again in the 600cc FourStroke class , Gocke n came from behind t o ove rtake Don She ridan Jr. in the second round with a 4.74S-seco nd winning time. Sheridan too k seco nd on his YamahaYZ450F in 5.013 seconds. Howeve r, Goc ken still had anothe r class to ride - the 400cc Stock class, w hich he wo n on his YZ250 with an excellent 4.72 I-second time . His first-round time alon e of 4.985 sec onds wo uld have won him the class, as his closest challe nger was district points leader R.J. Watson , who too k the second spot with a S.09O-second run . " Fa st Andy " Fo rtner lived up to his 40th Anniversa ry nickname again by flying his CRSOO over the top of the slick hill in 4.375 seconds in the first round of the 600cc class. That time wo uld hold up all night for not only the class win but also the beautiful Fast T ime trophy and the $ 100 that went wit h it. His closest challenger wa s Cody Jenner, w ho nailed a 4A04-second time fo r second place in the same class. The club also awards a Youth Fast Ti me trophy, and Shane Green claimed it. Green is the 2003 8Scc Junior Mini National Champ ion, and at age 12, he is riding in the Senior Mini class this year. He put his YZ85 ove r th e top in 5.266 seconds to take the Youth award.
