ond for the full distance was Fran Brow n. Monegan was running third early on but then was passed by Thomas and eventual• Iy dropp ed out with an electrical problem . Desant is took a Bultaco to an easy win in Sports man 2S0, leading from flag to flag. Brett Miller distanced himself fro m a battle between Thomas Englehart and Mike Ashto n to finish t hird. Ashton , meanwhile, put himself into fourth . The night's fi nal race was red-flagged on the second lap when Monegan cartwheeled his machine and drove himself into the ground in turn three . Amazingly , he was back for the trophy presentation, looking the worse for we ar. On the restart, it was Ben Evans hounded by Morgan and Brett Miller. By the last lap, it was Evans against Morgan for the lead. They went side by side through the last turn, with Evans getting the better drive and holding on for a narrow win. CN SPTMN 600 : I. AHRMA Speed & Sport National Vintage Trials Series PERFORMING FOR THE CROWD STORY AND PHOTOS By MAn BENSON ntage trials riders are accustomed to prac t icing their craft in front of on ly a few fellow competitors and section scorers. That 's all different at Vintage Motorcycle Days, w here a big throng of spectators always fi nds its way to the easily acces sible sections. Take a five here and you get a chorus of groans; a clean ride is rewarded with applause, wh istles and cheers. The pressure is on to perfo rm. And perform they did, particularly in the large Modern Classic division, where perfect and near- perfect scores - not to mention tie scores - decided class honors. The VMD trial moved from its trad ltional Saturday slot to Friday this year to accommodate the two days of AHRMA Vintage and Post-Vintage motoc ross that followed. The change didn't hurt, with over 100 riders taking part . Friday has grown into a big day in general at VMD (you don't want to miss any bargains at the huge swap meet!) , and a large number of spectators came to enjoy the trial in the shady woods on a warm , sunny afternoon. Riding the toughest line, the contest among the 16 Modern Classic Experts came down Dave Samuelman, on a '74 Yamaha TY, and David Black, on a '77 model , taking two dabs apiece on the second loo p. The trial consisted of eight sections ridden three times, and the many logs, muddy spots, closely spaced trees and slippery roc ks had little effect on winning scores , Samuelman took both of his touches in the same section , while Black dabbed once each in two different sections. With 23 cleans to Black's 22, Samuelman won the tie breaker and eamed the class win. Third went to tr ial organizer Bob Ginder with a score of seven, followed by Bob V Ellis's eight in fourth place. Robert Lord also had a two -dab second loop on his way to the Modern Classic Intermediate win. Tying with a score of three were Fred Ellis and lames Wipff, each taking two dabs on the first IDOp and one on the second trip around. Ellis had perfect rides through 22 sections to Wipff's 21 to take class honors. The top three riders all were Yamaha TYmou nted. There was little to challenge the Modern Classic Novices on their part icular line: The top 10 finishers among the more than 30 class entrants had scores of four or less. Montes a·mounted Mark Gawel and Honda rider Bruce Masek each rode an erro r-free trial. In the case tha t no ot her tie breake r can be used, AHRMA rules stipulate that the win goes to the olde r rider, so 51-year-old Gawell took the class win over his 50-year-old rival, Masek. Tied for third with a point apiece in Modern Classic Novice were Elmar Kruza and Darrell Shannon. Since Shannon was the first of those two to take a dab - on his second loop - third went to Kruza, on his Montesa . Michael Weinman's score of two was good for fifth on the day. Also winninghis classwith a clean scorecard was Ossa-mounted Mike Slate, in Classic Intermediate. His competition for the day, Richard Dippold, had five touches. In the battle of the GRM riders, Stan Bollinger earned the Classic Expert win with a score of one to lames Smith's I I. Scoring an eight, Lewis Mayer topped Casey Bollinger and Scott Kimin Classic NDvice. In the Premie r Ughtweight classes, it was Randal Black on his BSA B44 edging out Triumph Cub rider Graham Foster in the Expert class. Black lost all of his five marks on the second loop, earning the win by a single point. The Novice win also was decided by a single mark, with Dwight Gill best ing fellow Triumph rider Ken Bales, 3-4. Bruce Carman topped Steve Williams in Intermediate. Ron Winget muscled his big BSA Gold Star to an unopposed win in Premier Heavyweight Expert, while Beno Rodiwas the lone Girder Expert entry on his Royal Enfield. In Rigid Intermediate, Ray Corlew and his Triumph easily took the win, ahead of Rich Froelich, on a '46 BSA. CN 2004 (ROUND 9) GIRDER EX,", I. Beno Rodi (EnQ. 12. RIGID INT, I. Roy Conew (Trl). 2; 2.
