hill." Grant also had an interesting opinion on why he didn't make the podium this week. "I crashed in the first tum of the first moto, then tried to make up some points but rode too hard that moto and used up all my energy. came into the second moto already tired. So I kind of screwed up my weekend by doing that ." "Dude, that was unreal, " said pro skateboarder Salman Agah of participating in the N PG's SCOll Pro Board Sports MX National @ Washougal. Agah actually woke up in Huntington Beach, California, on Sunday morning, grabbed a 6 a.rn, flight to Portland with a buddy, got to the track an hour before start time , and borrowed a CRF250R from Ted DeVol of DeVol Racing to race the crossover event. My 52 OWN RACE: Greg Schnell 125cc 4th (13-2) The Team Amsoil/ ChaparraVHonda/Factory Connection bikes have been blazing out of the start, and this we ekend was Schnell's turn to pull a holeshot. And had he put two starts together, the hard -charging Schnell wou ld have easily landed on the podium . "First rnoto , I was about dead last; second rnoto , I got the holeshot," Schnell said. "Just kind of cruised along in the first rnoto , I've always been a slow starter. Takes me six to seven laps to get going. I've always been like that , but I've been working on it. And I definitely want to thank the guys at Factory Connection for doing such a good job on the bike." 32 Andrew Short 18th (40-12) Making a comeback from an injury is never easy, but this weekend Andrew Short showed that there is light at the end of the long tunnel to recovery, as he didn't finish the first moto but came back to put in a respectable 12th-place finish in the second . "I was bummed out after the first moto," Short said, "but I got a good start in the second moto and managed to salvage some points this weekend." Tucker Hibbert 26th (28-23) The snowmobile ace, riding for Team ECC Suzuki, continues to work his way up the ranks for the I25cc Nationals class - this past weekend scoring his best finish of the year. "I didn't feel too great in _ Saturday's practice," Hibbert said. "My lap times ..-t. were about three seconds off the pace . This morning I felt real good in practice, picked it up and got my lap times back to where they needed to be . Felt real comfortable on my bike and was having fun. I was dead last in my qualifie. but rode my butt off and got into the main without the LCQ. I felt good in the motes, I 10 right to the end . So all in all, it was my best resu lt of the year so far, so I'm pretty stoked." 61 Troy Adams 9th (9-1 I) The top privateer racer on the weekend was WBR/O'NeaVPro Circuit/Kawasaki's Adams. "Two good rnotos in or near the top 10 - just what I wanted to do ," Adams said. "I've been a bit inconsiste nt so far this year, so it' s great to finally break through. Pro Circuit and my mechanic got my KX 250F figured out perfectly, and I don't even feel like taking the week off before Millville. I can't wait to get back out and race again." The Huffmans sure pack 'em in at Washougal . More than 1800 racers showed up to run amat eur races last weekend. The place was a sea of motorhomes, campers, box vans, tents and dirt bikes. "That' s so huge," said NPG member Ed Santin 01 the Dirt Diggers North Motorcyle Club, which showed up in force to help the Huffmans do everything to put on such a successful National . "Y eah, and a lot of those 1800plusracers run two to three classes," added DDNMC's Mark Hilton. Mitch Payton had to pay up a longstanding bet to rider Ivan Tedesco regardingTedesco's I25cc-class Supercross Championship. Hairdresser to the MX stars Launi DiMaggio flew up from SoCal to personally dye Payton's hair black. "I think it looks good, don't you?" DiMaggio said. Lookinga bit likeElvis on wheels, Payton was a good sport about the whole deal. "We even had to use Go-Jo [grit hand cleaner) to prep his eyebrows so they'd take the dIye," DiMaggio added. Another one 01the crossover athletes had an interesting story. U.S. Snowboard Team member Ryan McDonald was running some cool "U.S. Army " sponsorship graphics. When asked about it, McDonald explained that he is actually a combat engineer by day with the Army, then participates in the Army's World Class Athlete Program CNCAP) during snowboarding's World Cup season . "I'm studying to be a combat engineer, and when I'm not doing that. I basically race snowboards on the World Cup circuit, skydive, and get to ride dirt bikes!"
