Over The Hill Gang Race '-5 MX Rashke Rages at 1-5 MXI By CHRIS CUMBO GORMAN, CA, JUNE 27 t the Over The Hill Gang race in Gorman , Californi a, Dusty Lunde absco nde d with the first Intermed iates moto holes hot, followed closely by Steve Karsten . They surv ived the dangerous step-up jump , wh ile Michael Rashke w as hitting hard , trying to stay up with the tw o front-runn ers . Gabi Abayov was runn ing third. Rashke tried an inside move on Karsten but lost momentum befo re a step-up jump . Then he tried the outside, adjust ing to pos ition himself back inside to push out Karsten . The four frontrunners were so close on the little doub le after the big tableto p t hat Rashke co uldn't jum p it and settled in to follow. You could have covered the front four wit h the pro verb ial blanket . Rashke w a s be h ind Lunde going u p the "Himalayas"; Linde slowed , allowing Karsten to out jump Lunde onto a few tight turns and a clear trac k. Rashke outcornered Lunde at the bottom and t he n mo tored right behind Karsten , who was whipping that bike wherever he wanted it, kee ping his we ight forward , and working with good t hro ttl e contro l. Lunde 's pace allowe d Honda riders Mike Schulhof and Paul Kuehnel to pack in behind Abayov. Abayov now had to get around Lunde, whose elbows were starti ng to drop: just after he cleared a little dou ble, Lunde's front end washed out. Abayov had nowhere to maneuver except into and on top of Lunde. The mot or was heavy and hot when Abayov pulled it off of Lunde's body, and the foo tpeg was pushing right into Lunde's chest . Meanw hile, Rashke, who was just ahead of the crash , worked his way arou nd Karsten and proceeded to put a 1Oeecond lead on the new secon d-p laced ride r, Kuehnel. Karsten was now third. Schulhof hung o n for fo urt h, just ahea d of Bernard Daily. In moto two, Rashke shot immediately into th e le ad an d too k co ntro l of th e mo to . Joe Acuna held down seco nd, with a hard-charging Karsten in third . Karsten's rearview mirro r was filled by Kue hne l, who was followe d close ly by Schulhof. The three we re only seco nds apart , A Chuck Cisler is on his way to a victory at round three of the District 16 Hare Scrambles Points Se ries in Denmark, Wisconsin. Distr ict 16 Hare Scrambles Points Se rie s Round 3: Viking Cycle Park Cisler in a Sizzler at Denmark Hare Scrambles By GREG PETERS DENMARK, WI, JUNE 27 T he re was an impressive tu rnout of riders for the third ro und of the District 16 Hare Scrambles Points Series. Some of thes e riders were motocrossers, but many were die-hard hare -scram bles racers. The re was also a terrific t urnou t of sp e ctat o rs at the Den mark track, and they cheered on t he rider s. The C class compe ted late in the mo rning. More than 47 racers signed up for the event. Team 2 rider Brian Haskell pulled the ho leshot and led for the first few minutes until he was pas se d by r iders De vin Kro pp and C harle s Harpe. Kropp , one of the best ride rs in the C class, soon encountered prob lems: His shift lever loosened and fell off his bike . Harpe became the front -runner and start ed to build a commandi ng lead. About halfway through the race , Harp e had pro blems of his own and was forced to quit due to chain and sp rocket gre mlins. Soo n, Suzuki rider Ch ip Bo ngers took the lead, and he held off Kawasaki rider Mat He rrington to win by five seconds. Troy Beaber finished third, and Haskell finished in fourth place. A fe w battles t oo k plac e in the B class. Donald Karnz and Jonath an Stueck fought for th e advan ce position for th e first few laps . Kamz , a Vintage motocross rider, began to pull a lead on Stuec k. Scott Nickoli, despite a poo r 88 start, began to catch Karoz and Stueck. Almost halfway through the race, Karnz decided to fill up his gas tank . Stueck and N icko li quickly went by him , a nd t hey waged an exci t ing battle . Stueck remai ned approximate ly 15 se conds ahead of Nickoli. O n the last lap, N icko li bega n to catch Stueck, but he finished eight seco nds behind. Karnz finished in third place, 30 seco nds ahead of Adam Greenwo od. In t he Over 40 class, Joe Kuick, last year's C-class ch a m p io n , go t t he h oles hot a nd re main ed un challe nged for th e enti re rac e , earn ing the first-place troph y as a result. The re wa s so me excitemen t, howeve r, in t he battle for second place. Mark Anschutz , who rides for Anschutz Racing, followed Kuick for the first few laps until he was passed Dar re l Hartzh oim, who wou ld finish second, with Anschutz ending up a distant third . Some of the best racing too k place in the A class. Dist rict 16 hare scramb les refer ee Rick Anschutz got the holeshot, with Ryan Moss in sec ond. Rick held the lead for nearly a lap until he was passed by Moss and Ch uck Gare tso n, A few laps late r, Gar etson passed Moss for th e lead. Garetson mainta ined the advance posit ion until C huck Cisler. w ho quickly worked his way through A-class traffic, caught him. Shortly afte r taking the lea d, Cisle r had to stop for gas, and Garetson regained t he lead . About halfway AUGUST 4,2004 • CYCLE NEWS Michael Rashke was razor-sharp, going 1-1 in the Intermediate class at the Over The Hill Gang Race at 1-5 MX in Gorman, California. each wa iting for the others to make a mistake . Rash ke was flowing flaw less ly ove r all the obstacles, widening his margin. Karsten, though , was pulling out all the stops, hitting hard on the step-up doub le and bare ly saving it to stay just ahead of Kuehnel and Schulhof. Karsten ran out of time to make a pass on Acuna , but his 3 ~3 finishes were good enough for second overall. As the race wound down , Rashke was able to relax a bit and cru ise to the checkers. Rashke's ste llar finishes have earned him top honors in his class , b ut t hen he has ch ur ne d o ut an impressive str ing of victories over the years. Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Series Round 7: Flat River Grand Prix Leivan Flat Out at Flat River GP By FRANK LEIVAN PARK HIUS, MO, JUNE27 CRIYamaha's Steve Le ivan made it two Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship wins in a row by putt ing together a strong and strategic ride at round seven of the series in Park Hills. Mounted on a W R4S0F, the de fend ing series champ ion took an early lead and held it to the checkered nag for his fourth win of the 2004 campaign. S 40th Anniversary While there we re a few sect ions of sand at this year's Flat River Grand Prix, most of the trail meande red thr ough the roc k-filled woods of St. Joe State Park, The o pe n sect ions of trail were dusty, w hile visibility and traction wer-e good in the timbe r. Leivan and his two closest competitors we re the only ride rs to com plete five la ps, wit h Le ivan r idi ng 2 : 2S:31 a nd averaging right at 24 m ph,
