2005 Harley-Davidson eva Models trouble for those of us who have a hard time restraining our throttle hands. The bike is an absolute blast to launch (rom stoplightsin a cloud of smoke and burnt rubbe r. Straight-line performance is this bike's forte , but hit a canyon road and the bike does just fine. The only thing holding it back is the limited bank angle while leaning into the corner, and its funny riding position is a bit annoying on a curvy road . The annoying thing is that the bike and its tires are capa· ble of a lot more lean angle than the foot peg location is designed to deal with. I just take my inside foot off the peg in tight cor ners and let it fold up and then plop my foot back down when I stand the bike back up, dirt-track style. The power increase is blatantly obvious when riding in the canyons or accelerating onto the freeway. Whack the throttle open and the bike leaps forward with a ton of enthusiasm. Ifpure performance ina HarleyDavidson is what you seek, look no further frame. The airbox cover, fenders and radiator shrouds are also color matched. There are new controls including a new forged , chrome- plated handlebar riser, clamp, and instrument bracket with new spun -aluminum-faced tach and speedo. T he new handlebars feature internal wiring. Passengers will be happy to know that the new custom seat looks a bit more accommodating than the stock version . In addition to a pile of chrome and alu- than this bike, because it absolutely rips. The Screamin' Eagle V-Rod will reta il for $25,495 ($25,595 in California). H·D will only make around 2400 units of this Iimiteded ition mode l, so get your order in soon. S CREA M IN' E A G LE FAT BOY This bike is a torque monster - that's a fact. The 103 cubic-inch (1690cc) stroker twincam motor is the largest displacement engine ever offered in a production HarleyDavidson. This hand-bu ilt motor features big.bore cylinders and an all-new flywheel assembly, pistons and balance shaft. The bore and stroke dimensions have been increased from 3.75 x 4 inches (95.25 x 101.6mm) to 3.B7 x 4.37 inches (98.26 x 110.99mm). The fuel-injected big bore is said to produce over 100 ft.-Ibs. of torque. Helping to feed more air to the fuelinjection system is a Screamin' Eagle Stage I air cleaner, with the spent exhaust gases exiting through new slash-down mufflers minum accessory bits, the V-Rod has custom five-spoke forged reactor wheels, which not only look trick, but eliminate the sail effect that has plagued the V-Rod, and Fat Boy for that matter, in a strong cross wind. On the street the V·Rod is a tot al blast to ride, but it could spell with chrome heat shields. To handle the new -found power is a hydraulically actuat ed heavy-duty clutch. When it comes to the styling of the new Scream in' Eagle Fat Boy, the bike is over the top , and yet it is so integrated, you would have to look at the stock bike sitting next to it to get an idea of how many chrome and custom bits adorn it. Starting with the paint, the Fat Boy is offered in three two-tone paint jobs, including Platinum Mist and Slate, Candy Cobalt and Starlight Black, and finally Electric Cherry 48 AUGUST 4,2004 • CY CLE NEW S 40th Anniversary
